I've been trying to make this idea work. Recently playing White against Peter Wells, he tried 3. .. d5. After the semi forced sequence 4. exd5 Qxd5 5. Nc3 Qe6+ 6. Qe2 Nb4 7. Qxe6 Bxe6 8. Bb5+ Bd7 9. Bxd7+ Kxd7 10. Kd1, the engines prefer 10. .. Nc6 or 10. .. f6. In both cases this controls the e5 square which appears necessary. After the actual 10. .. g6 11. Ne5 Ke8 12. Nb5 Nd5 13. Re1 Bg7 14. a4 Nh6 15. Ra3, the centralised Knights and later Rooks are difficult to neutralise. White appears to have an advantage and later won.

Black doesn't have to do any of this, and could just play .. g6, Bg7, d6, e5, Nge7 with a regular position. Other set ups are possible, bearing in mind the possible transpositions to Open lines with d2-d4.
