I notice that it was last addressed in Chess Publishing about five months ago, with Glenn Flear writing of "more than one way to find joy for Black."
Relatedly, the last-but-one Chessbase Magazine had Erwin L'Ami on a "practical repertoire against the Dutch" with what I presume to be 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 d5 4. e3.

So many opening products ...

See also Richard Pert's Playing the Trompowski.

Of course, pretty much every book on the Dutch (MacDonald, Williams, Moskalenko, Johnsen & Bern, Kindermann, Pedersen, etc) provides a decent response for Black against 2.Bg5, so it's probably playable for both sides.

Lars Schandorff recommends 2.Bg5 for White in his Play 1.d4 The Indian Defences.  If you want to play this line, I would start there.

As long as you understand or know the tactics after 1. d4 f5 2. Bg5 h6 3. Bh4 g5, then White is always likely to be marginally better. Or that at least is the current assessment.

If Black doesn't play .. h6, you most likely transpose to a position that could be reached via 2. Nf3 or 2. Nc3.

It's a fully playable, recognised sideline. 2 Nc3 is similar and perhaps a little more respectable somehow.

Neither refutes the opening of course (doesn't happen.). In general the Dutch gives white a fair bit of leeway Smiley

I mean that 2.Bg5 looks unorthodox and am asking if Back has a way out even with correct play by White. The Dutch has always been a bit of a bugbear for me, partly because I do not fully understand it. My preference is to prevent Black form setting up his ideal position. I have tried 1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 f5 3.d5 with good results because that simply prevents Black from playing a 'normal' Dutch. Now I am looking for a way against the direct approach 1.d4 f5 before my opponent settles on a Leningrad/Classical/Stonewall setup.  Thnks

Have a look at Moskalenko's book. He has some suggestions.

? You mean +/= for white? Would be a major shock if white got much more than that vs sane play.

=/+ for black would be even more of one!

Is the 1.d4 f5 2.Bg5 all it's hyped up to be as a destroyer of the Dutch?  I like it that White does not allow Black to play a normal Dutch but is there a line that Black can use to wriggle out a =+ or =+ ?? Thanks
