I don't play the French, but I play against it. The idea 1. e4 e6 2. d3 d5 3. Qe2 is played as a move order option, the usual intention only being to continue in the style of a mainstream French Kings Indian Attack. You've committed the queen to e2, but exchange variations may work less well and you have the flexibility to throw in c4 and perhaps Nc3. Also you can play Bf4 without having to move the d2 Knight out of the way.

I have Vitiugov's book French Reloaded which I have high respect for.

Recently I was looking at some sidelines though - and somewhat bizarrely his two lines against this 3.Qe2 end in advantage for White!?

I dont mean to be critical of the book. It is brilliant, and even this analysis of this sideline is really objective and top class. I was hoping to pick up one of these lines (3...Nc6 or 3...dxe4) but looks like I will have to stick to my usual 3...Nf6 and back to familiar stuff.

What do other French players think of this sideline? It used to be played by Gawaine Jones and is not a simple matter in my opinion, deserves a bit of respect.
