The Austrian isn't bad of course, but a pure tempo down?!

The same sort of theme(s) perhaps become mildly more relevant in that c4/d4/e3/Be2 stuff that Grischuk played a couple of times.

Hello.

If I had actually prepared this, seems probable I'd have gone for:

1.d4 Nf6 2.f4 g6 3.e3 Bg7 4.Bd3 0-0

5.e4 d6 (Pircish although 5...c5 looks attractive as well)
5.Nc3 c5
5.Nf3 c5
(and now let's assume) 6.c3 then probably 6...d6
5.c3 c5

Basically black is the attacker when he goes c5 and there is probably at least a degree of strategic risk for white to manage.

Have a nice day.

In a recent league game, the opening moves were 1. d4 Nf6 2. f4 g6 3. e3 Bg7 4. Bd3 O-O. At this stage, playing Black I wondered about the idea 5. e4 entering an Austrian style formation at the cost of a lost tempo.

Perhaps Black can play ..d5. It would always be possible to wait a move or two before playing e4.
