Certainly White has a number of ways of gaining an edge in these lines, but do they promise more than 3. ...de ; 4. d5 does ? For now it doesn't appear so to me.

Hello.

Maybe going:
1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 a6 4.exd5 Nb4 5.Bc4
Is also an option. There seems to be no reason to fear Bf5 and if:
5...Nf6 6.Nf3 Nfxd5 7.Nxd5 Nxd5 8.0-0
White is more comfortable, with a small lead in development.

After 3...g6 maybe this is good?
1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 g6 4.exd5 Nb4 5.Bb5+ Bd7 6.Bc4 Bf5 7.g4!? (7.Bb3 also decent obviously)

Have a nice day.

Another option in the 3. Nc3 Nimzowitsch Defense

1. e4 Nc6 ; 2. d4 d5 ; 3. Nc3

The main line 3. ...de has been under a cloud for a while. The alternative 3. ...e6 is really more French than Nimzo and 3. ...Nf6 is unsatisfactory.
Instead, it appears playable for Black to make a waiting move. The most useful would be 3. ...g6, and then the lines 4. ed Nb4 ; 5. Bb5+ Bd7 ; 6. Bc4 Bf5 ; 7. Bb3 Nf6  and 4. Nxd5 e6 ; 5. Nc3 Nxd4 look decent. However, the move 4. Bb5 is awkward to meet. (Perhaps 4. ...a6 ; 5. Ba4 b5 ; 6. Bb3 de ; 7. d5 Na5 is a try.) 4. Nf3 and 4. e5 also give Black some problems to solve.

Hence 3. ...a6

4. ed Nb4 ; 5. a3 Nxd5 ; 5. Nxd5 Qxd5 ; 6. c4 Qd8 is slightly better for White, but probably no more.

4. Nxd5 e6 ; 5. Nc3 Qxd4 (5. ...Nxd4) ; 6. Be3 Qxd1+ ; 7. Rxd1 Nf6 should be tenable.

4. Nf3 Bg4 ; 5. Nxd5 e6 ; 6. Ne3 Bxf3 ; 7. Qxf3 Nxd4 ; 8. Qd1 also an edge for White

4. e5 Bf5 ; 5. g4 as in the Advance Caro is certainly a serious option, but Black could get some annoying counterplay with ...Nb4 if White doesn"t take a time out to play a3.

All in all, no great shakes for Black (unsurprisigly), but given the poverty in alternatives there may be some relevance to 3. ...a6 and 3. ...g6
