Yeah, the French bishop comes in handy defending e6, too. And we all know how French games have this dual nature--solidity then the strangest  tendency to explode into chaos...

Yeah, I'd certainly be inclined to recommend that a 1500 play ye olde 5...Qb6.

The common stuff I'd think - the idea of hammering at d4 is very easy to handle on a basic level.

Swapping bishops like that requires a fair bit of subtle play after it as your development is rather retarded.

In his book How to play against e4, Neil Mcdonald suggest 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d6 3. e5 b6, and then after ...Ba6 exchange of bishops.

What are your opinions of this line?

Is this line something you would recommend to a 1500 player or is it better to play something more common?

McDonald also suggest as a second alternative, the Wade variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Qb6 5.Nf3 Bd7), which I'm also looking at.
