Upon a glance, it looks like it compares poorly with (for example) the Catalan line 4...dxc4 5 Qa4+ Bd7, because White isn't committed to g3+Bg2 just yet, and can therefore play some early Ne5 and win the Bishop pair for free.

Been looking at this as am a Catalan player, was wondering about the reply Bd7

1) d4 d5 2. c4 dxc 3.Nf3 Nf6 4. Qa4 Bd7 5.Qxc4

Burgess does not even mention this move in his chapter on the variation, this seems a little odd as I am striking it as much as the other alternatives, Nd7 and c6

Database I have has only one high level game with Bd7 and that continued in an unusual fashion.   Does white have anything better than g3 going into Catalan lines? or is there a reason the move is rare
