Mikhalevski has covered 6 Qe2 quite a bit recently in his column, and considers it dubious.

What about 9.Nc3!? instead of 9.Be3?
Seems stronger to me as it takes the sting out of a black Nd5, which can be very unpleasant (e.g. also after 9.Qd3 Nd5!)
I have analysed and played this and am not convinced that Black gets full equality here.

But The simple  6... d5 is driving me crazy. According to my engine (stockfish) it's dead equal after 7.exd5 Be7 8.dxc6 0-0.
It was quite a shock I didn't find anything in this position.

I agree it's quite shocking that Black can give away two pawns, one with check and still be equal. Very much an engine line. But you say it has the GM seal of approval from MVL. Who was that against?

Blocking the White square bishop on f1 with Qe2 looks quite normal these days as does blocking the f8 guy with Qe7. But it does have tactical disadvantages if Black can castle and threaten .. Re8.

Hi
I'm quite interrested by this line.

I'm not afraid of 6...d6 and 6... Qe7 which leads to opposite side castling.

I find 6... Rb8 and 6... a5 quite interresting but I don't think it can refute white idea.

6...Bb4 6... Be7 and 6... Bc5 are all met by Qg4 at some point and it leads to an unbalanced game. You must be quite prepared in theses line.

But The simple  6... d5 is driving me crazy. According to my engine (stockfish) it's dead equal after 7.exd5 Be7 8.dxc6 0-0.
It was quite a shock I didn't find anything in this position.

Mvl played it recently :
