chessbase for the cheapskate

To this point I have been using chessbase engines and stockfish with the fritz GUI. I want to step up with the standard chessbase but its expensive for me. So I downloaded SCIDS vs. PC and I don't like it, I like the fritz/chessbase gui style better.

So I realize maybe I can do the following....

I was considering buying Chessbase (the basic download only, not the starter package or better). I would forgo the purchase of a new chessbase engine or the megadatabases.

Then I thought I can use it with the free stockfish.   I would then use the free databases ("king" I think it is or "TWIC").

What are the limitations to doing it this way right from the start? Is this not much better than what I am currently doing?
