Goodpoints. I think the online database runs out after a years subscription also (I am 6 months into a Chessbase purchase) without the megadatabase add ons.

I just saw this service: http://www.kingbase-chess.net/

If I download this, how would I merge it with by "big" database?

Chessbase has a function to merge 2 databases and remove duplicates see http://help.chessbase.com/CBase/14/Eng/index.html?001562.htm
I don't know any free software doing the same thing.
However I never bought Chessbase as I was able to work without this function for more than 2 decades. A bit smart copying and not caring about a few duplicates does the job too and is completely free.

That's really useful - thanks  Smiley

Is there any reason not to simply use the Online Chessbase database instead of updating all of the Twic's manually?

1) Often in tournaments there is no internet for the PC and if you neither have a smartphone then you can't access this online database.
2) I don't think the simple Fritz gui can access the online database. Probably with the expensive Chessbase it is possible but I don't want to pay for it.

BTW, probably too late for gd6595, ChessPubber, Katar, from time to time posts a database for Scid vs PC format. see
http://katar.weebly.com/blog/millbase-for-scid-update2
However, the database has not bee updated since July 2016.
A pity as I am too "lazy" and has been relying on his good work.
Maybe he will read this and update? Wink Cheesy

thanks again.

FYI, The TWIC does go back to mid 2012 I believe. However, I couldn't figure out how to download from the TWIC in one large batch. It was a tedious process to download, unzip each article separately so I quickly gave up.

So what I did instead was download something called "king database" which had all the TWIC thru march 2016. I then just cut and pasted what I needed from there into the big database. From march 2016 to end of Feb. 2017 I manually downloaded from the TWIC website.

Now I figure I will go back to the TWIC website once a month to get updates.

I also backed up the finished database to a thumb drive because I sure wouldn't want to do all that downloading again!!

No. Just be sure to remove doubles. Also, I don't think free issues of TWIC go all the way back to 2013, so you're going to have a gap in there.

hi again.

I updated big database 2013 thru Feb 2017 using TWIC. Saving the new files directly to the 2013 database.

Should I have kept them separated?  ... (using both big book 2013 and TWIC database separately as opposed to merging the two?)

Hi again.

A friend is giving me a sealed copy of an older version of chessbase. I also will have "the big database" from 2013 I think.

What would be the best way to fill in the gap between 2013 and now?

I was assuming I would just download the free "This week in chess" database (or another free database) and load that into chessbase when I want recent games.

I think there usually are two days each year where chessbase has a 25% discount on everything. You can wait for those days.

Last year it was a day in May and Black Friday.

Each 'key' only works for three installs. So there might be a problem there.

great articles, thanks.

Another idea, one that would be the easiest on my wallet, would be to buy a used old version of chessbase.

What issue might I have in regards to the activation key or otherwise?
