The Chess Stars update indicates that Shaw does deal with 8...Qe6 as well. I've put the analysis in this post. As it's freely available on their site I assume there's no problem with that:

({Correct is} 8... Qe6+ $1 {as I suggested in the "Annotated Games"
section.}

I don't have the books at hand - just downloaded the update. I couldn't find an annotated games section there - so I assume Kontronias is referring to the orginal book here?! But if so, he very likely did not say "8...Qe6 is correct" (compared to 8...Qc7, which was apparently his main recommendation), but rather gave it as an interesting alternative?!
If so, Shaw probably deals with it too, but Kontronias saw no reason for an update here?!

Seems odd for 8...Qc7 to be analyzed out 50+ moves when he considers 8...Qe6+(!) to be stronger anyways...

Is this an update on lines that John Shaw had written in his 1.e4 book? I just noticed on the QC blog someone asking about it.

Me too! Wink

Yes. One part deals with Shaw's 21.Rg1 (p.391 in his book) and shows that 'the best' continuation leads to a drawn rook + fh pawn against rook endgame (beyond move 50). The other more relevant suggestion in this variation is Qe6 instead Qc7 after  which may be reasonable but I don't understand the resulting positions well enough to have formed any opinion yet.

There is also some stuff on

Does anyone have this book?

I'm thinking about learning this defence. Would I be better with Kasparovs book or this?

Thanks.
