Assuming that you are a Falkbeer Countergambit player, how would you meet the seemingly absurd, at first sight, 3.Nf3? If 3...dxe4 4.Nxe5 and then you are virtually forced to play 4...Be6, not to meet 5.Bc4 with the same move, that would be virtually forced, and a terrible e6 Pawn after Bxe6.

Did you ever meet this line in pratice? What are your ideas?

The Falkbeer was once considered the refutation of 2 f4 but is it really playable these days, except at a very fast time limit and/or a rather low level of chess?

Surely it's sounder (and very practical too) to play 1 e4 e5 2 f4 d5 3 exd5 exf4!, isn't it?

3 Nf3 has been around a long time; I'd recommend just playing 3 ...exf4.

I notice that Fine in the 1940s thought 4...Bd6 "probably best," while both that and 4...Nd7 have been given as leading to equality in later books.  Speaking of seemingly absurd at first sight, MCO mentioned 3...Nh6 as Miles once played against Hort, leading to "play for the lost material" for Black.

Seems like the kind of thing Stefan Bücker might know everything about  Smiley

I like 4..Nd7, as played by Capa and Botvinnik.  It sets a little trap, since if 5.Bc4, you have 5..Nxe5 6.fxe5 Qd4 attacking the Bishop and Pawn at the same time.

Go back to the 1890s and some of the big names were playing it this way with White.

4. .. Be6 isn't forced since both 4. .. Nd7 and 4. .. Bd6 can be played to eliminate the e5 Knight.

Even playing 4. .. Nf6 and allowing 5. Bc4 Be6 6. Bxe6 isn't any worse than the other lines, in the opinion  of an engine anyway.
