He was the first to popularise it by beating strong opponents and thus elevating its theoretical status. That makes sense. I see McDonald often refers to the alternative 3...Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 g6 as the "Czebe variation" on the main site.

I don't know if the other alternatives 5...a6 and 5...Bg4 are named yet.

Tiviakov has mainly championed the line 3...Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 and this has been named after him in "Playing 1.e4" by John Shaw.

According to Megabase he has played it a number of times in 2016 against much weaker opponents.

I haven't got access to my database right now, but I believe he played the variation about 170 times!

Presumably variations are named after their founders or those deemed to have popularised the line? Has Tiviakov done enough of the latter to justify that?

I'm not sure he plays it now that often does he? I looked up on chessgames.com and he appears to be playing the french regularly since 2015/16.
