Kotronias in "The Safest Scandinavian": "If there were someone entitled to lend his name to the opening, that would be unquestionably GM Sergei Tiviakov. He was the first to popularise it by beating strong opponents and thus elevating its theoretical status. I believe that without his games no one would have understood the merits of the system and how poisonous it could be."

Tiviakov has mainly championed the line 3...Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 and this has been named after him in "Playing 1.e4" by John Shaw.

That makes sense. I see McDonald often refers to the alternative 3...Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 g6 as the "Czebe variation" on the main site.

I don't know if the other alternatives 5...a6 and 5...Bg4 are named yet.

According to Megabase he has played it a number of times in 2016 against much weaker opponents.

Presumably variations are named after their founders or those deemed to have popularised the line? Has Tiviakov done enough of the latter to justify that?

I haven't got access to my database right now, but I believe he played the variation about 170 times!

Why hasn't any (recent) author or strong player named 3...Qd6 the Tiviakov Variation, if a variation is often named after a strong player who played and studied a line intensively, and also published about it?

I'm not sure he plays it now that often does he? I looked up on chessgames.com and he appears to be playing the french regularly since 2015/16.
