He was in great form with a good result on the final day to be fair.

Just seemed slightly rusty/nervy the first 2 days, to be expected.

One feels that Kasparov could have performed better with good time management - he probably played some training games before the event, but the tournament situation is quite different to a training situation, especially after a long hiatus!

Anyway, his opening ideas could definitely be the subject of a thorough investigation - it seemed that he was generally outpreparing his opposition.

Yeah, I would love to see Kasparov return to classical chess. He would bring back some much needed excitement to the game!

On the other hand, the way Kasparov got his only full point so far (vs. Le) ...well, it reminded me of Reshevsky hanging his queen against Savon, which Bronstein called "the blunder of five centuries."

In nearly every game Kasparov was slightly better or much better in the early middlegame. His openings were a complete success. He seemed to suffer from classic rustiness and some classic symptoms of age (inability to think quickly, blunders when tired).

It's incredibly frustrating not to be able to win won games.  I've been there certain years--a horrible phase.  Kasparov was won against Aronian, Nepo, and Navara, and lost to two of them.

Of course, the better position against Aronian, for example, could have been an artifact of Kasparov's poor clock management--he got the better position exactly by spending too much time on things. But I hope he plays a classical tournament, where there is more flexibility with regard to time, and gets the rust out. You can sense his strength and style.

R1 Impressions:

- Aronian with a game for the attacking manuals of the future
- Wonder what Kasparov saw that made him play e3 instead of e4
- Caruana with the usual sadness in short timecontrols

https://chess24.com/en/read/news/kasparov-officially-back-as-a-grand-chess-tour-...

If the Sinquefield Cup from Aug 2-12 isn't enough for your chess needs, right after (starting Aug 14) is the next leg of the GCT - The "St Louis Rapid & Blitz", which is going to mark the (at least temporary) return of ole Garry to rated chess.

Will be curious to see how well he will handle himself in a more serious environment compared to the 4-player Blitz tourney last year.
