Aagaard / Ntirlis offer both lines for black:
4... Nc6 followed by 5. Bd3 (or 5. c3 transposing to the mainline) Nxd4 with a short line they qouted from Eingorns, with nothing new to say.

And the more complex
4... cxd4 with three subvariations: 5. Nxd4, 5. Qxd4 and 5. Bd3

I've still too much other repertoire holes to enter that more complex stuff, so i'm happy with that simple line for starters.

What's White's idea after 4...Nc6 - ? 5 c3 is just a regular Advance French, while 5 Bd3 Nxd4 on the surface looks like an improved version (...Ne7-c6).

I like the idea of taking with the knight on d4.

The only real argument against it I'm aware of is 4.Nf3 is a mistake and Black should punish it with 4...cxd4 instead of allowing White to rectify things with 4...Nc6 5.c3. But in practice we can assume White is happy to play the gambit line he's offering.

It is no-nonsense line, in fact any book on french defense (for Black) should menton this. The move order you provided is perhaps the mainline, though Eingorn ('Rock solid opening...') and Berg give some alternatives, iirc. (on move 5 Black has Nd7, or Ne7-Nec6, there is also an idea of taking on d4 with knight after 4...Nc6).

Absolutely no idea about any theory in this, but 4.Nf3 appears to be called Nimzowitsch System, and after 4. ..cd4: 5.Bd3 it becomes a "Ruisdonk Gambit" https://chesstempo.com/gamedb/opening/593

Hi,
I'm new in this forum and I already enjoy reading the messages.  Cheesy
I have one question about the French Advance (C02/04) with the moves 4.Nf3 cxd4 ; 5.Bd3 Nc6 ; 6.0-0
Do you know the name of this gambit (Nimzowitsch Gambit, Dom ?  ???). In my database, I have seen great attacking players choosing this line : Keres, Nimzowitsch, Hodgson, Kogan and Crosa and they score very well !
Let me know if you have already been playing with or against this line ... Kiss
