9...Re8!? could be tried, e.g. 10.O-O-O Bb4 11.Nde2 f5!?. I'm not sure about this one.

I've looked at the exchange variation from time to time, without mastering it. I remember being attracted to the idea of putting rooks on the central files with 0-0-0 and R(h)e8. But some author recommended 0-0-0 and R(d)e8, to prevent (or delay) simplification. Perhaps it goes against the grain, yet is the way to play on.

Thanks for sharing the game, brabo. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd even considered ...Kb8/...Bc8. I'll keep that in mind for next time. There's definitely still play left if Black keeps both his Bishops.

Definitely your 11th move was rather tame. I was winning against a 2400 fide rated opponent in the game below. I've played the position already 4 times with each time exciting games.

Yeah, I agree in retrospect ...Bb4 is probably a better way to go against the early Nc3 if I'm trying to win the game.

Actually what happened in this game (as well as in the two blitz games I cited in the notes) is that I played ...Bd7, ...0-0-0, ...Bd6 and ...Ne7 fairly quickly because I "remembered" that it was "theory" - erroneously so.

So my theoretical lesson to take from this game is that I should probably try ...Bb4 instead. I'm also curious if my play could be improved following 11 Nb3 (which, by the way, came as a surprise, despite the two blitz games), as more of a practical lesson.

Checking my own games it seems none of my white opponents castled long in the Exchange Variation.
  • 9...Bd6 Of course there is nothing really wrong with this but it does make a target for the wRd1 as you found out against p-wnattack. I think if white spends a move on f2-f3 then ...Bd6 is quite good, so you might not want to rush this.
  • 9...Re8!? could be tried, e.g. 10.O-O-O Bb4 11.Nde2 f5!?. I'm not sure about this one.
  • 9...Ne7 I rather like this one with the idea of ...Ng6, ...Bb4, ...Rhe8, and then find a plan. The knight doesn't do much on g6 but it is out of the way and can reposition. Rooks to the middle, bishops eventually to the long diagonals (or an opportune bishop takes knight), it should still be equal but black does not have to agree a draw in only 19 moves.

Last night I drew in 19 moves with Black against an opponent 200 points lower rated. The game began 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Bxc6 dxc6 5 d4 exd4 6 Qxd4 Qxd4 7 Nxd4. I've never really looked at this line seriously, and so I chose a set-up that made sense to me, although I'm now aware it's not exactly the most ambitious. I'm wondering if I could've played any more ambitiously from the diagram above.

The game itself went as follows:
