Iotov recommends it in NIC-Yearbook 121.

Yeah, this 6 Bd3 thing is legit; probably even simpler than the traditional "refutation" 6 g3. Shaw recommends it in "Playing 1 e4 I".

First time poster here.

I ran into this line recently and ended up in some trouble. Having never studied it in any depth, my understanding was roughly "against 3...Qd6 simply play g3, Bg2 against everything, play quietly and hope for some queenside pressure".

Can White do better than this here though?

I examined a little

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.f3 a6 6.Bd3!?

provocatively allowing Bg4 here. It seems that White's results are not that promising in the database, but engine analysis gives very playable positions as White.

6...Bg4 7.h3 Bh5 8.Ne4 Nxe4 9.Bxe4 Bg6 10.Bxg6 hxg6 11.c3 e6 12.Qb3!? seems to have a decent pull, since Black struggles to defend b7 without making some kind of compromise.

What do you guys reckon, stick with g3, Bg2 etc, or investigate further 6.Bd3!?

Give no quarter. Expect none in return. Punish mistakes ruthlessly. Seek simplicity when ahead. Seek complications when behind. Respect every opponent. Fear none.
