I noticed that Peter Heine Nielsen in NIC gave 10. g4 Nxg4"!", with no mention of 11. Nh3.  (The page can be seen at https://www.schaaksite.nl/2018/06/06/altibox-een-nieuw-idee-tegen-de-najdorf/ .)  I don't know what Sam Collins had to say in the May update ...

10.g4! Nxg4? 11.Nh3 is good for White, the engine shows a significant plus.

Huh, thanks for that, Stefan.  I don't have a powerful engine with me at the moment (away from my personal computer), but it does look like White gets full compensation after 11...Nf6 12.Rg1.  I don't see what I'd call a clear edge, but it does look like something I'd be happy with for White.  So maybe the whole idea is more interesting that I'd thought.

GM Kotronias played this Qd2 move in round 6 of the Budapest Spring Open against IM Grinwal. Was this before or after the Carlsen game? Novelties travel in such a fast pace.

Will Carlsen repeat this?

We will have to wait to see whether he, or any of his fellow top GMs continue to give it a try. I suspect enticing Black to play .. d6 is a key element as if Black has .. e6, rapid development with Nf6 and Bb4 becomes possible. Thus it's a possible idea against Najdorf players. Dragon players probably wouldn't object to playing 2. .. Nc6 against 2. Nc3

9...h5 seems a bit off to me, since 9...Be7 develops and prevents 10.g4 due to 10...Nxg4.  Anyhow it's a game of chess, but I feel like White's already on the back foot.

Why not 9...Be7 indeed.  Daniel King mentioned 10. Kb1 0-0 11. g4 Nd7 triangle ...Nc5 or ...Nb6 and ...b4.  So old-fashioned-looking, Danny!

Will Carlsen repeat this?  What do I know, but put me down as a doubter ...

10.g4! Nxg4? 11.Nh3 is good for White, the engine shows a significant plus. Better seems 10...b4 11.Na4 Nxe4 12.Qe1. Here Black can play 12...Nc3 13.Nxc3 bxc3 14.Qxc3 Ne5 15.f4 Bb7 16.fxe5 Bxh1, +0.10 or so for the engine, unlikely the last word in such a sharp position. 12...Nf6 may be best, but White has full compensation and plenty of options.

I just saw this game for the first time.

Offhand it seems a shame to have to play 9.f3, as with this kind of rapid queenside castling hack, White clearly wants to push f2-f4 and then either e4-e5 or f4-f5 as appropriate.  Therefore I like 8...b5!.  I casually tried to make some kind of early Qd2-Qe3 or Qd2-Qe2 idea work, but in general it just seems like nothing for White, and there should be multiple ways for Black to be at least fine.

As white Pocket Crafty would always play 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 4.Qd1. This is the perfect low-storage computer opening: open, no-theory, equal. It’s not totally ridiculous. In some true Open Sicilians with 2.Nf3 and 4.Nxd4 the Nd4 retreats, and if it goes to f3 or e2 the tempo count is the same as Qd1-d4-d1. The best for black I found was the Dragon. I always got a nice game, but playing blitz chess on a small screen with a stylus I could never win.

Magnus’s version is even “better” because the queen stays “developed”.

Offhand I would wonder if White can be equal after 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cd 3. Qxd4 Nc6 4. Qd1 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6 (a 4-1 Knights Sicilian?) ...

Carlsen's latest idea

Any thoughts on Carlsen's recent game with Wojtaszek at the Gashimov Memorial?

That started

1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Qxd4 Nc6 5. Qd2.

The follow up was b3, Bb2 and 0-0-0 with f3 and Nh3 also played.

You could also get there from a Morra non-Gambit

1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. Qxd4 d6 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. Qd2
