Hi,

Thanks for all your recommendations. Of course, ako is correct that there are no promising non-Yugoslav systems, but +/= isn't always everything. Wink I will look into the Be2/Bg5 system, thanks MNb. As for the Be3/Be2/Qd2/0-0-0 thingy, I played this for a bit after reading the Dangerous Weapons book. The most annoying thing I always found was in the ...Ng4/Bxg4/...Bxg4 stuff, you kind of have to either take on c6, or meet ...Ne5 with b2-b3, both of which felt kind of gross. That being said, I might dust it off again. Undecided

Sorry if my previous post was a bit of topic. I only wanted to point out that the sharper the position are, the more moves are forced and the more moves are forced the more likely the game will end up in a forced draws or mass simplification, thats true particullary in corr chess.

Be2 Bg5 system or g3 leeds to less forcing play so I dont understand why they should not be better than for example Bc4 yugoslav where blacks is fine prorivded one knows all theory deep and plays the right sub variations.

I you  want some odd low theory line there is the Be3 Be2 (no f3) 000 line. The advantage of the line is that it allows white to play Be2 vs classical without fear of g6. However it gives no theoretical advantage against best play.

I am currently playing in a thematical dragon event at ICCF. I met 000, both Bc4 and 9 000, lines in all black games except 1 and all of my games are draws  or will end up in draws so Dragon is a forced draw 😀 if we add that all my white  will  end up in draws except for maybe 1 game. I have found an improvement in 9 000 d5  10 Qe1 where white has very little if any advantage at all. I will  create a thread when the event is completed.

This is correct, but 6.g3 looks even less promising to me.

but still - Bc4/0-0 or Be2/0-0?

The latter and then specifically Karpov's 9.Bg5. You can play it against the Accelerated Dragon as well. While Black can equalize in at least two ways the position always remains tense. If you feel confident that you can positionally outplay your opponenent you can hope to win.
The problem with Bc4/O-O is that after finishing development White lacks a useful plan against Black's best lines. However if Black is so nice to throw in ...Qa5 White has excellent prospects for an opening advantage.
Don't take my word for granted though; take a look at 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Bc4 Bg7 7.h3 O-O 8.Bb3 Nc6 9.Be3 Na5 and 9...Bd7 first. Perhaps you like them for White. And of course 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 O-O 8.Bb3 d6 9.h3 directly transposes.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Hi,

Lately I've been trying to switch from my old favourite c3 and Bb5 Sicilians to the Open (at least against 2...d6 and 2...e6). While I do intend for my main weapon against the Dragon to be the Yugoslav Attack, I'd like to have a less sharp back-up weapon (both to play against someone I suspect is highly-booked up, or when I just don't feel like Yugoslav-ing).

What is meant to be the most promising non-Yugoslav set-up for White these days. I'm aware "promising" is relative, but still - Bc4/0-0 or Be2/0-0?

There are no really promising non-0-0-0 lines. You could as well choose 6.g3 Nc6 7.Bg2 and

a) 7.-Nxd4 8.Qxd4 Bg7 9.e5 (Andreikin- Khalifman 2018)

b) 7.-Bg7 8.Nde2

1.Nf3! -  beat your opponent by killing his zest for life.
