Smyslov's other system

Perhaps superseded by the Zaitsev, but the Smyslov system 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 0-0 9 h3 h6 is well known. The idea behind 9. .. h6 being to prevent Ng5 instead of ignoring it and being prepared to repeat Rf8-e8-f8 as in the Zaitsev.

There was another lesser known idea also attributed to Smyslov, namely to play 9. .. Qd7. This prepares 10. .. Re8 and the regrouping of the Bishop to f8 as in the regular Smyslov and Zaitsev. Ng5 can be met with .. Nd8. I suppose you could play 9. .. Bb7 and then follow up with 10. .. Qd7. With d8 vacant and possibly e7 as well, you have some alternative homes for the c6 Knight if White plays d5.

People play all sorts of slower c3,d3 ideas these days, but the traditional methods can still apply when White plays d4 even at the cost of a tempo.
