i really like Sverre Johnsen's latest book on the open games.

it doesn't have a bullet point overview of plans like Flores, but it does have plenty of explanatory notes presented in a sensible way.

edit: accidentally didn't capitalise names.

Bologan has a section in his Spanish book about common themes in the lines he recommends - possibly there is a similar such chapter in his Open Games book?

I don't think Soltis or Shereshevsky (in Mastering the Endgame 1) had much to say about the Italian, though.

Too bad that the three further books Rios was going to write (coming out in 2017, 2018 and 2019) have apparently fallen by the wayside.

IM Herman Grooten has a recent book on Spanish and Italian structures, albeit in Dutch.

Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis is my old favorite, followed by the two-volume Endgame Strategy, which isn't really about the endgame.

General plans for Black

Hi,

I have searched various opening books, this forum and other resources, but all I could find is a lot of lines.

What I haven't found is a bullet-point-like overview of plans for both sides in the opening (especially for Black). Something like GM Mauricio Rios provides in his book on Chess Structures.

Could anyone please describe the general plans for me? What are the strategic goals for both sides? What are the pawn breaks both sides aim for? Should Black play to d5 or maybe for f5? etc.

Thanks so much!
