This was actually one of the lines that I was curious about when viewing the TOC. I had previously thought that line kind of sucked, looks like perhaps this is still the case unfortunately.

So is 8...c6 or something else holding up allright, or is White just better with 8.Re1? No need to get specific. But I've been thinking of taking up 6...Na6 or 7...Na6 for Black; would be nice to know it's a waste of time before I ... waste lots of time.

I play 8...c6 from time to time, its solid enough and still holding up theoretically, not many winning chances though, but just so you know this line is not covered at all on the DVD. By the way the immediate 8...Bg4 is worth investigating in my opinion.

This 8...Qe8 line is one that I did a lot of work on a few years ago being attracted to a few Kingside attacking ideas that looked promising at the time, but concluded that though playable for Black it's no fun if White is accurate. Libezewski and Maze offer no new insights at all, and I wonder why they bothered to include it.  In my Database Maze has never played the line, opting for 8...c6 instead. Perhaps he explains something on the DVD that is not in the pgn, but as i don't speak French I couldn't say.

Hi all,

My French is also non-existant but after viewing the vids and examining the pgns, my conclusion is that the DVD is strong in some places and superficial in others. For example: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 Na6 7.0-0 e5 8.Re1 Qe8 seems to be suggested, but the analysis or lack thereof is so skimpy for such a critical main-line that I considered it a complete waste of time, which did nothing to help one understand what's going on. Full disclosure  I consider the Qe8 line to be quite bad for Black, which seems to be a shared opinion considering how rare it is at GM level. On the plus side the line they give against the Makaganov System though rare looks to be a very interesting and effective antidote to a hitherto quite poisonous line.

On a scale from 1 - 10,  not sure how to rate the DVD overall just yet, I would need to review the material more thoroughly first, also I forgot to mention that I really hate dual commentary Opening DVD's in general for various reasons but primarily because the presenters often waste time engaging each other instead of the audience.

Regards,

Toppy

If the analysis was thorough and well-researched I'd pay for just that (my French is...nonexistant). There are some topical lines covered here and Maze is a pretty consistent KID player.

Interesting, thanks for mentioning it! Looks like 6...Na6 7.Be2 e5 is their main recommendation against the Classical?

My French is almost non-existent despite two years of it in school. So I wonder if an English-language version is planned.

A minor comment:  in the video sample, GM Mazé describes 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 0-0 6. Be2 e5 7. 0-0 Na6 8. d5 Nc5 9. Qc2 a5 10. Bg5 h6 11. Be3 b6 12. Nd2 Bg4 as "assez rare, mais assez intéressant."  That has however been a "book" move for a long time.  One little fact is that it appeared in the first Yearbook, which came out the year Mazé was born.  (That was via ...Nbd7, in the pre-...Na6 days.)
