I remembered KingBase has been discussed on chesspub already.

The search feature works great.

I don't think I can buy CB11 somewhere for cheap?

It's possible to buy CB13 and CB14, but the prices are almost high as CB15! No discount.

What you're really paying for between the 'download' and 'starter' packages is the database. You can just use all the available TWIC issues and make a db of about a million games, or you can send Crowther 30 pounds and his complete db of about 2.3 million games back till 1994. (worth it, by the way.) With Big Database you get 7.6 million games.

I don't know about Caissabase, but having a 'professionally' curated db means that your data is clean, standardized, etc. You may not need that, but for opening prep, serious research, it might be worth going the TWIC or Big Database route.

I'm using Chessbase 11, which has all basic db functions I need. 120 Euro for an update to CB15 is to much. Especially for a class player like me.

Not going to dispute that, but I don't own CB at all yet, so it's not a question of updating for me.

Not sure how well that fits here, but

As a first-time Chessbase Buyer,
https://shop.chessbase.com/en/products/chessbase15

Is there any worth in getting the packages? They seem ludicrously expensive for what they offer.

120€ for CB itself sounds reasonable enough, Database I can pull from somewhere (Reddit hat some Caissabase post at some time, and I have some old TWIC Database somewhere I think)..
But is there any reason to buy more than the "Base Model" (or even if I don't like the package, ie would buying the Big Database over just downloading the Caissabase thing be worth it)?

I've just published the first installment in a new video series devoted to demystifying ChessBase and other chess software. It's totally free, so hopefully this doesn't fall afoul of advertising regulations.

Have a look here:
