Playing KID positionally to me is as strange like playing QGD to attack and mate by move 25.

I feel that the more positional choices with the kings fianchetto is Grünfeld and Leningrad Dutch with ...c6.

It depends what you compare it to.

I'm trying out the KID as a sane, medium sharp alternative to my usual razor-sharp defences. As long as you avoid the Mar del Plata that doesn't seem impossible. Consider for instance trying:

- 6...Na6, 7...Na6, 6...Bg4, 7...exd4 or 7...Nbd7 against the Classical (all more solid than 7...Nc6 but often at the price of a slight disadvantage)
- 6...Na6 or 6...e5!? against the 4PA
- The Fianchetto is already a bit less sharp, so it's possible to go for one of the main lines there, like the Panno or some version of the ...Nbd7/...e5 lines, without getting an immediate tactical chaos.

The Sämisch may actually be the hardest of the main lines to suggest something solid against. Maybe the Byrne system (an early ...a6 and ...c6) or some classical line with ...e5.

Puts me in mind of a line advocated on a ChessBase DVD (Königsindische Verteidigung - Ein modernes Repertoire) which was played by Andersson long ago:  1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 0-0 6. Be2 c5 7. 0-0 Re8.

Not really, no. Of course there are games that Black wins in smooth positional fashion, but Black always runs the risk of needing to take drastic measures to be able to hold the balance. Often Black must time his counterplay perfectly, sacrificing a piece for two pawns to destroy White's center for instance, and if he fails to act in that moment, White can consolidate a large positional advantage.  The long term trumps are usually in White's favor unlike, say,
the Open Sicilian.

Hi, when I look at the KID's history i see only great attackers like Kasparov, Geller, Bronstein, Stein, Smirin, Radjabov,...
Can the KID be played strategically (à la Andersson for instance)?
What I mostly found are games (and books) where Black makes huge positional concessions (often giving up on a side) to obtain activity and unclear positions. Can you play the KID as black in a more balanced way without necessarily burning all of your bridges, favoring for instance a game of manoeuvre and small nuances with long-term advantages (a bad piece vs a good piece for instance...) ?
