There are no actions to perform.

I dislike the way that this has been run the past few years.  At a minimum, I think that we need to:

1. Have a thread started by someone in an official position of some kind (Mr. Kosten himself, another forum administrator, etc).
2. Solicit nominations and have members second those nominations, as we have in the past.
3. Have ending dates for both the nomination process and actual voting clearly posted when we begin the process.

I would personally also:

4. Limit voting to registered members, perhaps to those with a minimum number of posts if possible. It wouldn't have to be very restrictive, even simply 10 lifetime posts would be enough to prevent someone from having friends make accounts to vote for a particular book, for instance.

Ok, that's fine by me. If IM_serious doesn't mind I will delete the poll, and then we can start anew with nominations (in this thread, why not?)
How much time do we need for nominations and voting?
Regarding point 4, I propose that I clean up the members list and delete all who have never posted, and I can also stop accepting new members during the voting period.

I second Eric's suggestion.

How about adding John Shaws two 1.e4 books: 'Sicilian main lines' and 'French defence  and Sicilian Sidelines'.

I can't actually see how to add extra options (and I thought the Administrator was omnipotent!) maybe we should make some more suggestions and start a new poll?

Also I would very much prefer if voting only starts once the list has been fixed.

It's strange to start with a long list from just one user. What sort of democracy is that?

Perhaps delegative democracy fits:
Quote:
Delegative democracy – form of democratic control whereby voting power is vested in self-selected delegates, rather than elected representatives.

I have read it, and it definitely should be.

But it's not an opening book. That has always been a requirement here I believe.

I was wondering if it is possible to nominate a nonbook opening product. I recently purchased the Leningrad Dutch DVD's from Pruijssers & Williams. It is really excellent, so I would like to nominate it!

It's strange to start with a long list from just one user. What sort of democracy is that?

In previous years users have nominated one or two favorites each, and this has led to the best of the year being represented in the poll. It works; why change it?

And the poll should obviously not be open until all the nominees are in, that even gives those on the initial list an unfair advantage! Please delete the poll and start over by asking for nominations.

Playing 1.e4, volumes 2 and 3 by John Shaw (Quality Chess) were published in 2018 and presumably deserve to be included on this list.

Opening Repertoire: The Sicilian Najdorf by J & J Dojknas (Everyman Chess) has a 2018 publication date, although I'm not sure whether it was available to buy before Jan 2019. Do we have a convention for such cases? (The book looks very good so far, by the way.)

ChessPub Book of the Year 2018

Can users add to the list?

It seems I've already forgotten how this works.
