Thanks for that, the US member has just replied that he has gotten someone to print the diagrams just fine. Thus it appears it may be something on his computer. I think he has a ChessBase program. No one else has mentioned a problem.

Inserting images is more colourful but I like the B&W diagrams produced by the CB printout. Interestingly the CB diagrams look better in Scribus than they do in MS Word.
Thanks for the suggestions.

The case of the US member raises some questions in my mind.
  1. Do the diagrams look okay in the pdf and it is only in the printout that they are wrong? (It's hard to imagine the pdf was messed up and he thought printing would fix it, but you never know.)
  2. Did anyone else try printing?
  3. Are the results different for people with ChessBase installed versus not installed?
If you can't get the embedding sorted before publishing your issue 2, a workaround would be graphic diagrams, as described by Steve Lopez at the 2011.04.29 link. And I think the "Board on screen" option described at the 2011.04.26 link also inserts a graphic, but with less control.

I agree the manual is a little thin. On the other hand, I have created a bunch of tools at work, and when they ask if there are any instructions, I just say I don't have time for that. Which they know is true, so they get someone else to write something up.

Thank you.  I will go through each of those links to glean what I can.  One issue I have had with our first run is a member in the US who has printed the magazine off to find that the diagrams are all numbers and symbols. I think this may be down to either the pdf version used (1.4) or a failure to embed the fonts into the pdf. of course both of these issues are with Scribus.  Still, we need to find out why the US member is unable to print out the magazine with the diagrams.

With CB15, I have amended the RTF fonts used for export to match the fonts used in the magazine, the one exception being the TTFritz diagram fonts but I found that you can copy these from the Windows directory into the Mac Font Book easily enough. Once that was done I was able to edit the magazine in the Mac in Pages before deciding to use Scribus.

I will read those links and see if I can improve the current RTF export, the manual does seem a little lacking on DTP options which is surprising as I expect ChessBase to be the main source for publishing quite a few chess related publications.

Thanks again.

This is a good question. There's not much detail available on the web, so a collection of hints could be useful.

What I was able to find, admittedly none of these are must-read:
It would be nice to hear from people who do this a lot. There seems to be a big difference between settings for print vs web.

ChessBase 15 for DTP

Hi,
I am publishing a very small circulation magazine for our chess club. Have started with ChessBase 15 for the games and diagrams and am exporting the RTF files into Scribus. (open source page layout program) It seems to work very well so far.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for producing the RTF files in CB15, eg. options setup and fonts to use. I have initially left everything as per the default, eg. old format pgn, although I did have to reduce the font size for the magazine.

Any tips or advice would be welcomed.
