Well, of course 2...d4 could come to the same thing as 2. Bg2 e5 3. c4 d4.  Which could lead to such known things as 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 d4 3. g3 Nc6 4. Bg2 e5 5. d3 Nf6 (a reversed Schmid Benoni) or in that line 3...c5 4. Bg2 Nc6 5. d3 e5 6. 0-0 followed by e3 (a reversed Late Benoni or whatever you want to call it).  But maybe those aren't very Snipery.

Why not 1. g3 d5 2. c4 immediately

Perhaps 2...d5 when from my database white hasn't done particularly well.

Why not 1. g3 d5 2. c4 immediately ¿ If anything, is should be improvement on the Réti line where Black tries for a reversed Benoni since White's g2 bishop has open diagonal without the knight blocking on f3.

What am I missing? Why should white allow 1.g3 d5 2.Bg2 e5 3.c4 d4 and 3...dxc4 if 1.c4/2.g3 avoids them?
Eg what does the white sniper play after 1.g3 d5 2.Bg2 e6 ? If it's 3.c4 again my point is confirmed.

I'm reminded of Christof Sielecki writing (in his 1. e4 book) that Black is in trouble after 1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 c5 4. dc Qa5 5. Bd2 Qxc5 6. Nd5.  Plausibly enough, the reversed version (1. g3 d5 2. Bg2 e5 3. c4 dc 4. Qa4+ Bd7 5. Qxc4 Nc6) has been given (by Nunn in NCO, at least) as leading to equality.

But against the Storey move order Black can e.g. play ...d5 and ...e5 on the first two moves, which quite often wouldn't transpose to Marin's lines.

True....but as I understand FM Storey's Sniper repertoire white still plays 3 c4. If black wishes he can now transpose into standard English lines with 3...Nf6 so a Sniper player needs to have a good understanding of the numerous options black has to force the game down English lines.

How well the Sniper DVD covers these options for black I have no idea but it would be something I would check before buying the DVD.

I'm not familiar with FM Storey's work but the move order looks similar to one of the standard English move orders of 1 c4, 2 g3 and 3 Bg2.

ChessBase have just produced a two DVD set on this by GM Marin. On the website they give a reasonably detail content page so as a starting  it may be worth comparing how Storey and Marin treat the positions arising after move 3.

Hope this is helpful...

I just discovered "The White Sniper" by FM Storey (author of the original "Crushing White: The Sniper!" for Everyman some 10 years ago) both as DVD and PDF file. (The PDF seems to be very expensive, tough).

The White Sniper is 1.g3, 2.Bg2 and 3.c4, while the original Sniper was, of course, 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and 3...c5.

Although these are certainly full of traps and interesting, I am not sure how good this stuff is against some real preparation and  opposition.

I recall the book by Angus Dunnington called Winning Unorthodox Openings. It had a chapter on 1.g3.

I have that book too. I recall it as good, but there's not that much space for each of the "unorthodox" first moves, and it must be almost 20 years old now.

Maybe that Davies DVD actually is the most comprehensive resource available for 1.g3. I haven't seen it. But Davies' repertoire book The Dynamic Reti was good (though also not exactly recent), and he knows a thing or two about the Modern Defence from the Black side.

With regard to The Fianchetto Solution it is 260 odd pages long of which only 80 pages are written from white's prospective. The other 180 pages are written from black's prospective using 1....g6.

The white side is also really focused on KIA type set-ups.

It's a strange book in some ways. For some unexplained reason they don't even start with 1.g3 with White, but with 1.Nf3. And they talk a lot about using the same themes and setups with both colors, but then it turns out they go for the Modern Defence with Black but the KIA/reversed KID/reversed Pirc with White. 1.g3 and keeping the knight's options open for a while would have been much more consistent with the Black part of the book.

No book that I'm aware of....but Nigel Davis did a DVD for Chessbase based around 1g3 but it's a good few years old now.

Bamboozle your opponents with 1.g3! - Davies (ChessBase 2010)

Another DVD: The White Sniper from Storey (Foxy Openings Vol. 134, 2011).

And Practical Opening Tips from Mednis (Cadogan 1997) has a chapter about playing 1.d4 or 1.g3.

Opening repertoire books with 1.g3 as White

As subject above, are there any opening repertoire books with 1.g3 as White? I mean, allowing 1...e5, so no Reti as White, and no King's Indian Attack, but some sort of reversed Pirc or reversed Modern, or else?
