Well, yeah. But at least he gives some variations so you get a rough idea.  It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a good discussion on chess books that are being published these days.

I also reject the idea that he is somehow participating in a scam. Maybe he's trying to get free stuff but I doubt that the companies are using him for free good reviews because he pretty much reviews everything -- even high quality stuff.

Yeah, Sigma is correct. I've been a keen reader of online reviews since the mid 90's. I learned quickly to ignore John's reviews because they are nothing but promotion gimmicks,

It's surprising and somewhat disapppointing that they are still going yet quality reviews have slowly disappeared from the internet. We are fortunate to have @proustiskeen and other forumites who chip in with reviews of works.

This behavior has been obvious for a long time.

Whenever publishers quote an Elburg review on their website, I take that as a strong hint to stay away from the book in question. Since surely they would quote any other positive review if they could.

It's an easy way to get free books to "review"...

Today I looked at some of John's reviews (http://chessbooks.nl/).
He seems think all(?) he review objects are fantastic.

From issue 191:
This book is overloaded with exploding positions!
Very original written and highly recommended!
A master piece of explanation!
This book will help you to become a master in chess!
The perfect companion of every chess student!
There is simple no better buy!
This Powerbook 2019 will change  your Fritz or ChessBase in to a super killing machine!
This DVD or download is overloaded with highly instructive material!
This is impressive!

Not one negative review! The same is found in issue 190. I didn't bother to look further.
