I have today received my copy. In bibliografie, book lists Van Kampen chess24 stuff.

I have not looked through this book enough since I just picked it up from outside my door few hours ago. But 7. Df3 is treated with getting knight jump c6 to e5.

7. Df3 has several chapters and odd positions with sharp play throughout the book. It looks like the Taimanow's equivalent of Najdorf's 6. Ag5.

I believe that Van Kampen awoided this in his chess24 series on Taimanow, by transposing to a type of Scheveningen without ...a6 by playing ...Cf6/...d6 against the 6. Ae2 line: https://chess24.com/es/learn/advanced/ebook/the-taimanov-sicilian/8#section-1. That is also another possibility.

Unfortunately white can avoid this line with 6.Be3 and then 7.Be2

I don't see the difference. Also I thought that 6.Be3 a6 7.Be2 b5 is interesting for black while 6.Be2 a6 7.0-0 b5 is much less strong.

Van Kampen refers to the Russian GM expert Vladimir Potkin to play the system without a6 but since 2015 he stopped playing it as I mentioned on my blog already in 2016: http://chess-brabo.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-expert-part-2.html

White should only play 0-0 after black has played a6.

Although from the index of variations on updated excerpt, http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/ebooks/SicilianTaimanov-excerpt.pdf is clear on Chapter 14st Pavlidis offers main line where White gains bitchop pair after Cb6.

I remember now two decades ago I used to play 12...Txc8 and sacrifice that a6-pawn, then take on b2 and try for attack with ...h5/...Cg4 instead of 12...Dxc8. Maybe that line not so good now  Cool

The English attack does not disturb you? White's play is really straightforward and I feel like black has to know quite a lot too. [/quote]

Not as much as the line with 8...Bb4 9.Na4, no.  I play 5...a6 instead of 5...Qc7, however, which has some nuances that might favor Black compared to the usual English Attack.  I have to deal with 6.Nxc6 in this move order, but overall the tradeoff is worth it to me.

I've played the Taimanov (and occasionally other related systems) for a very long time.  Regardless of theoretical outlook, I personally find the ultimate main line with 8...Bb4 9.Na4 to be very uninspiring for Black, though I'd like to see what this book has to offer.  Chessbase's online database shows White scoring 61% from thousands of games (raw statistics, but still) after 9...Be7 10.Nxc6 bc 11.Nb6, for instance.  White's play is fairly straightforward with the two bishops and no real weaknesses.  I've always felt that Black has to know far more here than White to get a decent game; White's play is much easier.  It's one of those Super-GM lines that doesn't suit us mortals very well, in my opinion.

+1 to what ErictheRed said above. I played the Taimanov in ICCF correspondence games. That traditional mainline was a bit of a bother. Black should be ok, but even with an engine it was much easier to find moves for white.

I'm interested in the Be2 chapters. That's currently my choice from the White side, and there are three or four lines I thought were a bit better, or at least pleasant for White (LML with 13 Bd4, LML with 13 e5, Nxc6/Qd4, and the early a3). Excited to see how I'll be proven wrong.

Good inside. My advise: 8. ...Be7  Wink
6.g3 is another prob, too.

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

20 years ago I used to play line with 12...Txc8 in that 6. Ae2 line, where sacrifice a6-pawn. Maybe this line is not good now  Huh

I am curious to how the analysis is compared to Chess Stars book or Taimanow Bibel.

An abridged variation index has been added to the end of the excerpt... GM Pavlidis indeed goes for the old 8...Bb4, 9...Ne5 main line against the English Attack and 8...Ne5 against the 7.Qf3 line.

I remember a whilst ago I used to read Sicilian Taimanow by Emms. In 6. Ae2 long line, does not Black sacrifice a6-pawn to have kingside counterplay as compensation ¿

They still have no index of variations on excerpt. But 11. De1 in English Attack sounds like Black puts bishop on b4 there.

Regards 7. Df3 it does look like ...Ce5 line, but not sure exactly. In any case, is the main line anyway.

So that's the long main line against Be2, ...Bb4 against the English Attack, and ...Nf6/...Ne5 against the Qf3 system?
