For the annotated games part, we have to consider his classic "My 60 Memorable Games". As regards the "autobiography" part, aren't all those interviews that he gave from roughly 1992 to 2005-2006, enough? I don't think that he'd add much to those...  Embarrassed

That book was not written by Fischer.

@Monocle: If you ever do grow that moustache (to go with your monocle!?), feel free to post a picture. 😊

Besides the Portisch book, I'm aware of two recent-ish resources on the Modern Steinitz (with 3...a6 4.Ba4 d6): A Modern Chess database by Davorin Kuljasevic and an Everyman book by Timothy Taylor.

But on the Old Steinitz with 3.Bb5 d6, it does seem like the Portisch book is the only recent resource.

I'll have to take a look at that.  As a 1.e4 e5 player, it sounds like something I ought to have anyway. 

Mostly I play the Breyer, but occasionally I fall into a super classical mood where I want to play like it's 1910.  I also like to play old lines in the orthodox QGD for this reason.  Fortunately, these moods don't usually last long enough for me to grow a big moustache as well.

It wasn't my suggestion (I was just quoting another poster), but I guess the idea is that since the queen often ends up on c7 anyway in the Scandinavian, it hardly matters whether it gets there via a5, d8, d6, or e5.  Of the available queen moves, I prefer 3...Qd8 myself.

Black's next moves will be c6 and Qc7 which will be comparable to 3...Qa5 mainlines.  Andrew Martin wrote an article in which he called this the "Patzer Variation."

I was reminded of Nunn-Portisch from '87, transposing to some ancient stuff in the Steinitz after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.O-O Be7 5.Re1 d6 6.Bxc6+ bxc6 7.d4 exd4 8.Nxd4 Bd7 9.Nc3 O-O.

On that note, I'd quite like to see something on the old Steinitz defence (3...d6) in the Ruy.  If it was good enough for Lasker and Capablanca, it should be alright at amateur level today.  I expect the book I'm looking for was already written about 100 years ago, but not sure how I'll find it.
