FWIW,

That book can be found on Amazon here:

https://www.amazon.com/Caruanas-Ruy-Lopez-Repertoire-Players/dp/905691944X/ref=s...

Per the blurb:

Quote:
The Ruy Lopez is arguably the most classic of chess openings. White immediately starts the battle for the centre, fighting for the initiative. This strategic clarity has made the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Opening, an eternal favourite with chess players at all levels. Inevitably, this popularity has also led to a wealth of opening theory.

In this book, Fabiano Caruana takes you by the hand and lays out a complete and practical White repertoire for club players. He avoids complicated chaotic lines, but doesn’t shy away from sharp battles. Caruana loves to find and use the tactics to punish Black for risky choices.

This one-volume and crystal-clear repertoire covers fifteen main variations, from the classical lines to the anti-Marshall (8.a4), and from the Schliemann (3…f5) to the Modern Steinitz. In an easy-to-grasp manner Caruana explains general characteristics, such as permanent weaknesses long-term goals, and is always looking for an advantage for White.

The insights of the World #2 in this classic opening, will not only greatly improve your results in the Ruy Lopez, but also sharpen your general chess knowledge.

The site says this title will be released June 29, 2021. Got a ways to go but Amazon will gratefully accept your pre-order money.  Roll Eyes

In the new in chess "Coming soon" section ("https://www.newinchess.com/coming-soon") there is a book with cover shown: "Caruana's Ruy Lopez: An White Repertoire for Club Players" by...Fabiano Caruana.  Clicking on it takes you to a wrong product, so no direct link possible yet.

I'd assume this is based on these DVDs but not enough information yet. If it is truly his work then he is easily the highest rated book author ever Smiley but I would have assumed he had more important things to do.

I haven't seen the videos, but thanks for the comments on them.

Anyhow, as far as I can tell, the new book "Squeezing 1. e4 e5: a Solid Strategic Approach" deals with the Steinitz Defence (after transposition). But I haven't checked the analysis to see what the authors recommend.

In general this DVD set seems to have a bunch of holes in places, which is a shame.

The things Caru talks about things are all excellent (ok, he doesn't go into super depth and eg doesn't cover Gustafssons recommendation against 8.a4, but naturally you can't go over everything ever); if you actually do get one of his lines, you are good to go.

But then eg in the good old Steinitz defence, after 1.e4e5 2.Nf3Nc6 3.Bb5d6 4.d4exd4 5.Nxd4Bd7 6.0-0, he somehow only goes over 6..g6 followed by ..Ne7, not even mentioning the by far most popular Black setup (of 6..Nf6 followed by ..Be7); 8..Bd7 after 7..d6 8.a4 missing was mentioned in this thread already; and this feels like it carries through every line.

A random click into the first best video, accompanied with a DB: Open Spanish;
9.Qe2 has 407 games in the Lichess Master DB. 71x (2nd most popular move) 9..Bc5, 26x 9..Nc5.
9..Nc5 gets 25 minutes of coverage in the first video of the Open Defence; 9..Bc5 apparently deserves roughly 5 seconds ("10.Be3 Bxe3 Qxe3, Rd1 to follow" is all that Caru gives, with 10..Bxe3 already only being the third most popular move, at 11/55 games).

It's a treat to hear an SGM talk as always, but this certainly does not feel like a standalone complete repertoire.

Perhaps the series would've worked out a bit better if Caruana had focussed on actually laying out a repertoire, instead of talking at length about why he didn't choose variation X - so eg in the Open Spanish vid, there's 1.5 minutes of talk on current developments in 9.Nbd2; I personally would much rather have those 1.5 minutes spent on 9.Qe2 Bc5, something I will actually play and potentially encounter.
On the other hand, that type of general knowledge is of course always good to have, so who knows..

Overall, the Spanish is thankfully an opening, where omissions of concrete theory are rarely going to backfire badly for White, but I do think an Opening series shouldn't immediately leave me with a feel of "I would have liked better coverage of.. everything"
Perhaps it doesn't help that Spanish Mainline content has been undergoing an untterly dry spell, so rather than "I got 90% covered, and want some updates/alternatives on the critical lines", this was more of a "I want to learn everything" type of deal for me, but I do think that eg the Black series by Gustafsson vs 1.d4 @chess24 does its job of educating the viewer much better.
Pretty disappointed that I still don't even have a convincing solution that punishes Black for 3..d6 Sad

I do have to say though, that the original fear of Caruana lacking explanations and making a phonebook file series that's impossible to enjoy at sub-GM level was entirely unfounded.
Guidance is plenty, and following it is a breeze. He does a very good job at keeping the viewer engaged & able to watch multiple vids in a row, while retaining information & without breaking into a sweat.

Does Caruana cover the old 6...Bb7 Archangel line? I don't see it listed in the contents on Chessbase.

How is Caruana's cocerage of the Berlin? I'm interested in the opening for black and I want to know if this is something worth looking at.

Hi,
so Caruana recommends 8.a4 against the classic setup- but why is there no coverage of 8....Bd7? What do I overlook?

The DVD's are great overall, but I also noticed that strange omission as well as some others. For instance: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.0-0 Bc5 is not covered [A funny exchange happens on the Berlin DVD, where Caruana mentions that 4...Nxe4 is not the only option and seems about to elaborate on 4...Bc5 presumably when Hans Ree Oliver Ree annoyingly interrupts, and the other options that Caruana alluded to never get mentioned again]

In general I dislike this dual commentary format, time gets wasted and lines get overlooked more than usual, often due to the distraction of the lesser commentator at inopportune times. A player of Caruana's class and a native English speaker to boot does not need the hand holding of a Hans Ree Oliver Ree, moreover it is clear from viewing the DVD's that Caruana is exceptional at communicating ideas to all levels of player. His exposition of the tactical and strategic themes that determine the essence of the various lines he espouses are crystal clear, while the background info he gives on why he has settled on a given line over another is both insightful and breathtakingly impressive.

On a side note I am proud to say that I reached the identical conclusion as Caruana regarding the weakness of the deferred Smyslov line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 (3...g6 is the standard Smyslov) 4.Ba4 g6 5.d4 exd4 6.Nxd4 Bg7 7.Nxc6! and White is better as explained by Caruana on the DVD. I also posted the same explanation given by Caruana on this forum over a year ago, along with some analysis to prove it, in the hopes that Mikhalevski would respond since he often employed the line successfully as Black and commented those games in his monthly updates. Mikhalevski never responded, and judging by his monthly updates over the years it is unclear to me if he ever reads the forum anyway. However, in a cruel twist of irony the following happened:

Zeller,F (2383) - Mikhalevski,V (2557) [C70]
GRENKE Chess Open 2018 Karlsruhe GER (3.19), 30.03.2018

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 g6 5.d4 exd4 6.Nxd4 Bg7 7.Nxc6! bxc6 8.0-0 Ne7 9.Nc3 0-0 10.Bb3 d6 11.Be3 Kh8 12.Qd2 Ng8 13.Rad1 f5 14.Bd4 Bxd4 15.Qxd4+ Qf6 16.Rfe1 Qxd4 17.Rxd4 Nf6 18.e5 Re8 19.f4 Bb7 20.Rb4 Ra7 21.Ba4 Re6 22.Re2 Nh5 23.exd6 Rxe2 24.Nxe2 cxd6 25.Rb6 c5 26.Rxd6 Be4 27.c4 Re7 28.Bd1 Bc2 29.Kf2 Bxd1 30.Rxd1 Re4 31.Rd8+ Kg7 32.Rd7+ Kh6 33.g3 Nf6 34.Ra7 Ng4+ 35.Ke1 Nxh2 36.Rxa6 Rxc4 37.Kd1 Ng4 38.Ra3 Nf2+ 39.Ke1 Ne4 40.Kd1 Rb4 41.Kc2 Rb7 42.Re3 Kh5 43.a4 Ra7 44.Ra3 Ra5 45.Kd3 Nd6 46.Kc3 Kg4 47.b4 Ne4+ 48.Kc4 Nd2+ 49.Kc3 Nb1+ 50.Kb3 Nd2+ 51.Kc3 Ne4+ 52.Kc4 Nd6+ 53.Kb3 cxb4 54.Kxb4 Rd5 55.a5 Rd2 56.Nc3 Rb2+ 57.Kc5 Nb7+ 58.Kd4 Nxa5 59.Rxa5 Kxg3 60.Nd5 Rb7 61.Ra3+ Kg4 62.Ke5 1-0

Surprisingly or Unsurprisingly the above game never made any of his updates, but I did notice that Mikhalevski hasn't employed that move-order since. Smiley

Postscript: For those who are interested, here is the link to the thread I mentioned https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?num=1522608448 quite prophetic I would say.

I'm guessing it's a promotion to advertise the availability on more platforms, incl. macOS, Android and iOS.

That looks interesting, so possibly the FritzTrainer app could run on a Smart TV I guess? If not now then in future.

Finally, finally, maybe Chesbase are waking up and smelling the coffee.

Thats fantastic news! I wonder if they will make the older titles compatible with the other platforms too? I'm hoping to buy a tablet soon and having the choice between an IPAD, Android or windows tablet would make things so much easier.

Yes, it's well worth checking every week. The DVDs on offer are usually the older ones that are not in much demand any more. I don't recall them doing this on a new one (though they sometimes have a sale that applies to everything). Perhaps Caruana isn't selling quite as well as they hoped?

I'm not familiar with Chessbase having deals of the week - is that really a thing?

Yes. If you go to their shop frontpage and scroll down just a bit, there's a "Deal of the Week" section.

I think they sometimes skip it for a week or two, but it's worth checking out. I used to check both the English and German shops every week, as the deals are sometimes different.

Now I had forgotten about these deals for a few months, so thanks are due to Straggler for reminding me.  Smiley

Don't ChessBase DVD always have this? At worst you could copy the notation out of the window. I've had to do this for a really old Aagaard DVD.

There seems to be three databases (pgn-files) according to the list of 'content'
93.01: Games by Fabiano Caruana
94.02: Repertoire database
95.03: Analysis database

What kind of proof is that?

It's perfectly fine to pronounce it in any way you want, but unless you're sending your messages via speech to text, I have no idea why that is relevant for anything.
You know the correct spelling, so why not.. use it? Language is fluid, but you still can't randomly make up your own spellings for words. That's not how it works.
The upside down question marks are w/e, but if you know the correct way of writing something, why would you intentionally botch it? This is completely lost on me.

On chess, please buy!  Cheesy I'm unwillig to splurge without some sample vid showcasing the general approach to the analysis, or a review by a trusted forum member - so I'm eagerly waiting for someone to have less patience than I do  Wink

I have a confession. I have Asperger's, so maybe I have a "weird" pronunciation. I know that I am a weird person, hundreds of people have told me that, so hearing it again is not really new to me. I do weird things like using a rotary dial telephone and a record player despite being born in the late 1980s. If there were no weird people, who would have invented the Pirc and Modern Defences ż

But I will say, I spell it like this in handwriting in person, such as to friends or colleagues. I also pronounce it exactly like "dí wí dí" when speaking English. If in the future, I ever had to give a chess video presentation or public lecture in English, I would pronounce it exactly in this manner.

It is kind of like when I speak Spanish, I usually pronounce "ll" in the Argentinian way like "ž", similar to the "s" in the English word "measure". Many Spaniards find that weird, but I became used to it. In Spanish, "DVD" is pronounced fast as "déu bé dé" but I pronounce it as "déu ué dé" which is a bit like "DWD".

Anyway, back to chess. I am very close to buying this three-volume set. The fact that Caruana is the (main) presenter is a big factor. I think that he is a generally a good guy. He seems to be more calm of a presenter too. I get distracted when some get overexcited when presenting and then I lose track or what they are saying.

My guess is that this three-volume set must have .pgn files, or at least I hope so. Caruana's .pgn files must be worth gold. How often do you get a World no. 2 plus World Championship challenger offering analyses like that.

You spell things wrong on purpose, annoying/confusing all other forum members ...

(big snip)

To actually do this on purpose is legitimately crazy

That's not quite right.
  1. As one of the forum members, I am neither annoyed nor confused, so the word "all" is misplaced.
  2. Also I dispute that it's crazy. I see it as just a harmless affectation, nothing to worry about.

You are right he is doing it on purpose. But I think it's just to amuse himself. It's a quirky habit, but if you get past that and look at the actual content of his posts, he has never written a single sharp word about another person, not even to defend himself. I couldn't say the same about many, certainly not about myself.

Yes. *Mod hat on*

Please recognize that this is an ‘English as an International Language’ (EIL) environment.

Please try to be clear. All of us, not just Trotsky.

And yes, the DVD set looks interesting!

I thought your english was just bad & you were too lazy to improve it in any way, and that you plain didn't care about people being unable to read your move notation, because you're a bit dingus

To actually do this on purpose is legitimately crazy

I always pronounce it "dí wí dí" when speaking, so that is how I spell it.

I am wondering to buy this, even though I do not play 1. e4 as White. I am interested in the Spanish as Black though. But it is a three-volume set, and over 70€.

Am I the only one that it took a while to realize DWD was just a typo for DVD? At first I thought, Deadly Weapons of D?  Grin Cheesy

Nope. I think Chessbase continue to require access to it's own software to run (or at least in order to see the board).

This sounds interesting, but will the DVD play as a normal video on the TV? The chessbase DVD by Kasparov on the Queens Gambit did that, but the next one I bought did not and I haven't bought one since.

Hopefully Chessbase have rectified this issue by now. I'd be interested in this one.

In the excerpt video, he has some guy sitting next to him during the presentation. Not sure what his function is  Cheesy

Hopefully his function is to reel in Caruana when he spits out a 40 move deep line in 5 seconds without even showing it on the board!  Wink

Very curious how this will end up looking, some sample vid would be nice to have. Could be the best thing ever (and sorely missed, as mainline Spanish has been a huge gap in the market for a good while now), could be largely unwatchable - very much depends on how well Caruana is able to transport his undoubtedly endless knowledge into this format, and make it digestible for people below 2800.

Adding a second person into the presentation should help ensure this is the case by asking the sorts of questions those watching may be interested in.

I have found Caruana in his post game interviews very good at explaining games in positional terms, I would have no worries on that front.

I just saw this today. At first I thought it was for Black, but it is actually a White repertoire.

In the excerpt video, he has some guy sitting next to him during the presentation. Not sure what his function is  Cheesy

I was hoping that Caruana's first publication would be a Petroff book for Black. I did not expect him to do DWD's. He seems very shy, and I did not expect him to do video work. Or at least that was my impression.
