Ok, to cut this conversation short ( Sad ) apparently it is not possible to have like buttons with YaBB Forums.
Of course, we could always move to more up-to-date software  Undecided

This is Web 2.0, an_ordinary_chessplayer  Grin "Useless" features will be always more and more... Let's only think about smiles. Are they necessary? 

But seriously, this is implemented in very serious sites such as Stack Overflow. (This is not to say that we are "less serious", eh) Are they all fools? Or is it so bad for the discussion? I think that it's good when you ask a question and perhaps 10 or 20 girls or guys let you know in a very simple, immediate way, that it is appreciated. OK, I'd rather have 2700 ELO, but that's it.

Okay, fair enough. I can see pluses and minuses, but I admit that any long-term effects on *this* forum are hard to foresee. So in the interests of furthering debate I put down some of my ideas above. I expect a fair number of others here will be receptive to your idea. Ironically, they are missing a Like button to show their support.

@an_ordinary_chessplayer: I think that a system of "likes" would add more fun to the board IMHO and that's it. That won't be an indication of any member's intrinsic value or else, just a feature that someone might use and someone else would be free to ignore.

I was looking for pros and cons of buttons. Almost everything is specifically about Facebook like and/or Google +1. I'm pretty sure that's not what is being requested here. One comment I found was funny, "Buttons make audience stupid" https://www.webmasterworld.com/webmaster/4931505.htm

Maybe the name of the button matters. One website I visit has Upvote and Downvote buttons. The Downvote button in particular causes hard feelings. Amazon reviews has a Helpful button, which I like. Smiley

I agree the value of a post is proportional to the effort that the member put into it. Isn't the value of a "like" also proportional to the effort that the member put into it?

I mean something that records the "thanks" or "likes" received and shows them in one's profile... that could motivate members and give others a rough impression of how much effort each member is trying to put in his posts. Just an idea of course, but for other boards it seems to work well.
