Yesterday we had 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bd3 (Carlsen-Firouzja), it's a matter of days before someone improves with 1.e4 c5 2.Bd3. However, 6.Bd3 was computer top choice against the Najdorf when Sadler ran his Silicon Road experiments last year,  so the move may have merit.

6.Bd3 is recommended in Ivan Cheparinov's:
Top-Level Repertoire against the Sicilian - Part 1
available at modern-chess.

6Bd3 is one move that you can't play against the Classical Sicilian Smiley

That did make me wonder if you could play 5 Bd3 to annoy Classical players. More logical than 5 Nc3 and 6 Bd3 in some ways.

Nc6 seems to be the computer suggested response anyway Smiley

A very weird main line indeed - 6 Be3 Nf6 7 Nc3 Ng4 8 Nxc6 bc 9 Bd2 g6 10 Bc3. Who knows what SF thinks!

But I don't understand why Nbd7 and b5 are dubious.

9. .. Nbd7 would allow 10. Nf5 with the possibility of winning the Bishop pair with Nxe7. Engines don't seem to be bothered by this.

I asked for suggestions as to what White should play after 9. .. Nbd7. The engine suggested line was to play 10. Be2 following up with Nd5 and a4. Again only a very small edge suggested for White.

The sharpest sicilian book says the following:
9.Ng3 is interesting, because Black cannot continue with the usual ..Nbd7, while 9..b5 is dubious due to 10.Nh5. Perhaps 9..Nc6 is the best retort, planning to capture on f4 when the pawn shows up there. 9..g6 is another reasonable option.

But I don't understand why Nbd7 and b5 are dubious.
