I tried the suggested romichess and like it very much. I would say it is actually FM strength (i am around there as well) and makes quite a positional and tough opponent, with a human style.

It has a very nice auto-learning feature and can learn from a chess games database. To make this possible, this is not included in the doc, you have to:

1) download your games database (i like kingbase lite) in pgn format
2) run the following commands
book_on
learn_on
quit

(yes, you have to restart once the program as far as i know)

And now, to build up the program's database with the self-learning algorithm:

merge mydatabase.pgn

If everything works, you will see the learn.dat file that comes alone with romichess increases in size while the database is processed and also in the command line prompt you will read the number of processed games.

Romichess has no GUI but can be integrated in ARENA.

Try RomiChess. It's a realistic FM-strength opponent.

Look it up on the page below, its download links are there, too:

Looks really promising. Thanks a lot!

I am looking for a good computer sparring partner.

My experience with chess engines when you handicap them is that they don't often make very human mistakes, but that is the sort of behaviour I'd like to see from my silicon sparring partner.

My ideal would be a chess engine with a human style of play in the 2100-2300 range (and a wide opening book, but I suppose I could sort that out myself). I'm not so fussed about whether it's an app or a UCI engine.

Does such an engine exist?
