I was thinking of trying out a FatFritz tuned Lc0 as a complement to Stockfish 11.  Is there a GPU configuration for less than $500 that will give decent results when added to an existing laptop or desktop with an appropriate port or slot?  Alternatively, in the short term is it better to simply rent computer time via the Chessbase Engine Cloud with the idea that in a year or two compatible GPUs will be much more affordable?

Not quite.

The engine - the part that makes the moves - is the same as LC0.

But the network - the brain that the engine "thinks" with - is very different. (Totally legal under GPL, btw.)

The way that the engine is configured is different too.

I've found that LC0 and Fat Fritz run much better through chessbase using the -rtx optimized versions that chessbase configures automatically than my manually set up LC0.  Obviously I did something wrong when optimizing manually - but it is about a 3X improvement in kN/S.  So I am quite pleased with that feature of Fritz 17.

I should note I have an RTX 2080

For lc0 the story is pretty much:

CPU / no GPU - don't bother, use the latest Stockfish dev build
GTX 9x0 / 10x0 - works, especially if it's a high end card it will get close to Stockfish
GTX 16xx - works, reasonably fast, affordable cards
RTX 20x0 - works, very very fast, and quite expensive

There seems to be some discussion about Fritz 17 and the neural network, and what model of gpu is the minimum to get good results. Anyone up to speed on this issue?
