Why would you want to play this? After 5...c6 White's choices are unappetizing, e.g. 6.Nc3 Bf5 (and if 6.Qb3, Qb6), or 6.e3 Bf5, or 6.Qc2 transposing at best into the line Kyle gave below.

It seems to me that after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5, 4.cxd5 is just inadvisable. 4.Bg5 is a better offbeat try, avoiding the Ragozin and Vienna. Richard Palliser, in his old Play 1.d4!, advocates this and has good coverage; after Bb4+ White can play Nd2, which of course is not some great aggressive move, but is quite playable.

Note: to correct errors in the move numbers I had to delete and repost this.

What's the point of 5.Bg5 in this line? I don't see anything white has acheived from delaying Nc3.

(In OP's line)

That's a fair point. I don't have the Sadler book here to check so I can't say for certain, but you're most likely correct about this, as it's primarily a book of ideas and doesn't aim to present a repertoire.

Sadler's book would only cover positions after 5...Be7 6.Nc3, I believe. Black has other good tries like 5...Bb4+, etc.

Matthew Sadler's excellent book 'Queen's Gambit Declined' (Everyman Chess 2000) has a whole chapter entitled 'Exchange Variation: Systems with Nf3', in which he examines the theory and also gives plenty of verbal explanation of what's going on. The book is nearly 20 years old, but this shouldn't necessarily put you off. I couldn't tell you how much the theory has changed since it was published, but it's written thoughtfully and clearly by a very strong player and contains many valuable insights that don't depend on it being bang up to date. I suppose it's really aimed at weaker players, but I read it when I was around 2100 Elo and learned a lot from it. It's still widely available new at cover price.

If there are "well known articles" on it, they aren't known to me.

It could of course transpose to the suboptimal (for White) line 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. cd ed 5. Bg5 c6 6. Nf3 Be7 (7. e3 Bf5; 7. Qc2 g6).

I recalled seeing someone ask about it in the context of a Nimzo-Ragozin repertoire.

Are there well known articles on 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.cxd4 exd4 5.Bg5.
This isn't technically the exchange variation since white hasn't played Nc3, but are there any well known discussions on it? I think its more likely to arise by the move order
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.cxd4 exd4 5.Bg5 as part of a move order to avoid the nimzo.
