Hi all,
Well there's been some stuff out on the Raptor recently (chessable and ichess, and they both seem decent and give different ways to play it). I was wondering, is there a well know response for black? What is the reconmended way to olay against it? I just want to see what the critical line is and see what the author's give vs it. Also, this is for thise who play it, after d4 nf6, bg5 ne4, h4 c5, is it better to push or play dxc5? Chessable give push, ichess gives take, both authors make nice cases for both but i wanted some other opinions. Thanks.
As of October 2019 Chess Publishing had 36 annotated games in the position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.h4. I'd look at this for critical lines.
Based on what I've read you've got two third move choice as Black. 3...c5 with the better score in the database, requiring more preparation, and very sharp. Or you have 3...d5 with less preparation, much calmer, and a worse score in the database.
For what it's worth I think Trompowsky players really enjoy the 3...c5 lines so 3...d5 is the practical choice. It also happens to be the recommendation of GM Avrukh in "Beating 1.d4 Sidelines".
Avrukh's mainline follows Vaishali - Rosen from the 2017 Lidums Australian Young Masters IM Norm Event up until move 12. Avrukh does not consider another 12th move from White aside from 12.c3 and it appears that improvements in this line are related to queen moves by White on move 12.
