Why are the Powerbooks a pass? I bought a couple around a year ago planning to go hunting for new opening ideas. I haven't gotten around to that, but I still thought it was a decent idea...

  • I don't trust engine games for statistics. My opponents don't play the same moves, or if they do then they don't follow them up like an engine would. And for myself, I can't play a move if I don't understand why it's good. If the only answer why is "engine statistics", then I haven't understood the move. I would almost rather play a bad move that I know how to follow up, than a good move where I have to look up the next move as well.
  • I have always hated the ChessBase tree. Compared to the Chess Assistant tree it's just inept.

So, I prefer to select my own data, consisting of a smaller set of games and comments that make sense to me, and build my own Chess Assistant tree.

I'm not that into the Benoni at the moment, but if I were, I would check how long it's been since Caruana last played it. If Caruana has given it up, Kasimdzhanov may be allowed to share more secrets (but on the other hand there may be some serious theoretical problem with it...).

A Powerbase is a selection of games from Megabase with a minimum Elo, usually 2350, some annotated and most unannotated. A Powerbook is the same plus a huge number of engine games from playchess.com, compiled into a tree. Both products are a strong pass.

I've just seen Chessbase have released a new DVD on the Benoni by Kasimdzhanov which has prompted me to think about picking the opening back up (particularly because there is a new book due out by Donkjas this month too).

While I think its great to see a new DVD on this opening it unfortunately only appears to cover lines after white plays Nf3 which is disappointing.

I saw Chessbase also have a Powerbook and a Powerbase on the benoni that have come out this year. Can anyone explain what is the difference between these two products?
