d.c4 a4 is quite sophisticated imo, the position seems pleasant to play.

Interestingly enough, GM Sam Shankland opts for 6.Be2 for White in his 1.d4 course on Chessable.  Part 3 is now out!   Cheesy

White’s idea in this line is 6.Be2 dxc4 7.a4 Bd6 8.Nd2 with the idea of taking back on c4 with the knight, rather than the bishop.  Portisch played this way against Timman in their 1989 candidates match and it was thought at the time that this was better for White than the normal lines.  Ftacnik gave 6..dxc4 a ?! mark in his CBM annotations.  I don’t know the current theoretical status.  IIRC, Grischuk was one of the commentators for the Ding-Carlsen game and he didn’t seem overly impressed with White’s Nd2-Nxc4 idea.  But the fact remains that Carlsen, Giri, Duda, Dubov, Shankland etc have all avoided 6..dxc4 recently.

I take it we are discussing the position after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c6 4.e3 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nbd7 6.Be2 ? Is there a clear line for white to gain the advantage after 6.Be2 dc and further perhaps 7.a4 Bd6 ? From what I can find it seems that 6.Be2 Bd6 has been preferred since about 2015 but find no reference to this line e.g. in Schandorff's book, first published in 2015. Is there perhaps a key game showing why Black avoids 6.Be2 dc ?

Why is it better for White?  After 10..Qe7, it seems like a pretty standard Dutch position, except that the Bishop is on e2 rather than d3.  Watson doesn’t really analyze it.  He just notes that the immediate Black attack with Rf6-h6 is easy to parry.  OK, but Black doesn’t need to do that.

BTW, I am not saying that 8..Ne4 is better or worse than Carlsen’s 8..b6.  Both seem fine to me.  I just went to look up 6.Be2 after Ding played it and saw that Ding had, in fact, played it before, Dreev had covered it in his book, and others had not.

Watson recommends 9 Qc2 f5 and then 10 a4 with the idea of Ba3 in his book . This looks better for White

I don't know what is considered best, but 10..Qe7 or 10..c5 seems reasonable.

BTW, Dreev recommends 8..Ne4 as a way to take advantage of the fact that White has omitted Qc2.

In the recent MCI online game, White played 6 Be2 in the normal Semi-Slav starting position. The game continued  6...Bd6 7 0-0 0-0 8 b3 b6 9 Bb2 Bb7 10 a4 a5 =. The position after move 9 has transposed into the recommendation from John Watson in his Strategic Opening Repertoire for White book. There he suggests 10 Bd3 and provides some illustrative analysis.

Am therefore interested to know what the current best continuation is for black after 10 Bd3.
