Well some people are interested in a 'pure" nn evaluation.

You may be interested in something like Cfish which uses a pure nn evaluation. Stockfish 12 uses a hybrid eval sometimes nn and sometimes classic Stockfish eval. There are some eval differences between the two.

Note that the one in Stockfish 12 is stronger, and that's why it is the default (and there's really no point in getting Cfish unless you want a worse/weaker engine). You basically don't want to run slow the neural network if you're already a queen up with no compensation for the opponent.

You are right, I use Aquarium and Fritz and Fritz gives win draw lose pct. but Aquarium does not. Talkchess covers some of these issues.

Please forgive an even more ignorant question. I read online that 'classic' evaluation means one expressed in centipawns, and 'nn' one expressed as a percentage estimation of the stronger side winning the game. When I run Cfish in Arena, evaluations are given in the same way as for any other engine -- presumably, still centipawns(?) Am I right then in thinking the 'percentage' evaluation only diaplays in more modern GUIs, and if so, which? Of course, if anyone knows any good websites which explain all this, that'd be great to know!

NN eval is just the net's evaluation.
Hybrid is mostly the net evaluation mixed with "classic" hand written Stockfish eval.
Classic is only the Stockfish hand written evaluation.
There are a few places to find Cfish just ask Google Wink.

Interesting. Could you explain for an ignoramus like me what these different evaluation types are? Where should I go for the latest version of C-fish, or any other of these engines? I did once download a few such things (Raubfisch, etc.), without having the least clue as to what they actually were!

Apologies to Michael for the misleading suggestion.

No probs whatsoever! I'm just grateful to be able to learn from all the insightful discussion. I've installed the AVX2 version and its working fine (I use Arena) -- thus far, some interesting subtle evaluation differences from SF 11's ...

The main concern for BMI2 is that Zen chips support it but are very slow at it, so for Zen you want the AVX2 build (which won't have BMI2). That's also what the table on the Stockfish site says.

Having followed the link to Wikipedia and read the note at the bottom, I see what you mean. Higher up, it says that for Zen-based processors, BMI2 is supported, and I stopped reading there. This really isn't at all straightforward for those of us with rudimentary IT understanding! Apologies to Michael for the misleading suggestion.

BMI2 is not really related to AVX2 - you can have a build with both.

The main concern for BMI2 is that Zen chips support it but are very slow at it, so for Zen you want the AVX2 build (which won't have BMI2). That's also what the table on the Stockfish site says.

AVX2 is considered better by the folks on computer chess fora.

Thanks v. much!

Thanks, Seeley, too! BMI2 isn't in the instructions I get when I run CPU-Z, but maybe that doesn't matter?

I want to install this on an Asus ZenBook UX305. I have the instructions SSSE3 and AVX2, so I imagine I should choose one of these versions from the site. But am I right, and if I am, is either preferable?

I went to this download page:
https://stockfishchess.org/download/
where the various options for download are listed, as far as I can tell, in descending order of speed. My laptop is now nearly five years old, but I found it was able to run the one at the top of the list (BMI2), so I would've thought your Zenbook would be able to manage that too. At the link I've posted, it says "If you don't know which CPU you have, you can go down the list and pick the first binary that does not crash." There's a way you can run a test to check this, but I don't have the instructions for that in front of me at the moment. If you'd like me too, though, I can post them later for you.
