How do all the (frankly baffling!) possible move orders work out? I presume that black 'can't' go for e5 before white has played f4 so there's some options there.

Indeed you are on the same track as I have been 1,5 month ago. I have prepared some splendid analysis which a.f.a.i.k. is completely new and avoids this e5 stuff. I have discovered some brilliant lines based on some very extensive work with the best engines but I definitely need to freshen up my memory if I want to play it in a standard game. It is too difficult to keep remembering all the details.

Well in the database you can find a number of games with e5. All of them were played by lower rated players. Some of the players are even unrated or children rated 1500 elo. At first instance it also looks a very stupid move. Why would somebody neglect his development to push twice the same pawn for no clear gain.

That is why I also said in the other threat that some lower rated players can hit on a brilliant idea which even the strongest professionals have missed (irrespective of consulting an engine or not). However it takes much more to get such idea universally recognized as something brilliant than just being played in a game. An endorsement on chesspublishing.com is of course a very good start.  Grin

Anyway I don't claim it is mine. In fact nowadays in 99/100 it will be the engine being the originator of the idea or the engine is the instance strong enough to show its merits. Still you still need a human (often grandmaster) to get such ideas considered as an addition to the existing theory. Computers can't talk to us (yet).  Shocked

Its especially confusing that no one had even looked at it before - its obviously a very well known/respected line with black having Nc6 in instead of a6.

Maybe everyone who played an early a6 was after more of a fight Smiley

In the last edition the grandmaster Michail Roiz discuss a special idea in the Scheveningen which I asked him to once look at see https://www.chesspublishing.com/content/4/index.htm#sch

On my blog I've now published the story behind this concept: https://chess-brabo.blogspot.com/2021/01/revolution-in-millennium-part-3.html. I think this should now also explain better why I stated yesterday in the thread https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?num=1591883528/45#45 that computers are rewriting big parts of the theory and that older games are very rarely still relevant for topplayers.
