Speaking of modern, the March 2024 chesspublishing column on 1e4 e5 contains an Open Ruy Lopez game. Harry Grieve thoroughly analyzes the game Lamard, Guillaume-Sasikiran, Krishnan Cappelle-la-Grande, 2024-03-06.

It commences 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. de5 Be6 9. c3 Be7 10. Bc2!?  Bg4!. The game continued with 11Qe1!? 0-0!? with sharp play and a piece sacrifice accepted on move 16. White has options on move 11. Harry provides options for Black on move 11.

I always liked the Dangerous Weapons series and think 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. de5 Be6 9. c3 Be7 10. Bc2!?  Bg4! qualifies as a dangerous weapon.

The only book I have from Pavlovic is one on the Marshall countergambit.

I was referring to Fighting the Ruy Lopez, Everyman 2012, not the Modernized Marshall Attack, 2020.

If you wait some month I hope you will have the pleasure to read my book on Open RL in project.

This is a rare opportunity to make a request! Here are two lines that deserve more coverage than has been made available of late:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6 9. Be3 Be7 10. c3 O-O 11. Nbd2 Bg4 *

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6 9. Qe2 Nc5 10. Rd1 Nb3

I hope your book covers these lines.

Yes.

I am going digital whenever possible. This can be read "in the cloud," opened in ChessBase (CB), or imported into Chess Opening Wizard (COW). What I like about the CB and COW options is that I can do what-if analysis, and permanently save my comments and analysis.

Marin also has a good book.

Do you mean this?

I wouldn't call it a book. Or is there something else by Marin I am not aware of?

I agree. Marin also has a good book. Each is primarily from Black's viewpoint. Their selection of lines by black differ.

Mikhalevski's book is more of a repertoire book; I recall that it covers 5d3 and 5Qe2, maybe more. Marin's book is more recent.

The only book I have from Pavlovic is one on the Marshall countergambit. I think it's a good and thorough book. I appreciate that he provided a complete repertoire book - down to the exchange variation.

The current Pavlovic book on the Open Ruy seems to have gone deep rather than wide, based the table of contents and sample chapter. It starts with white's 9th move. Three chapters start on move 15.

It looks good, though more specialized than most books. He chooses the Dillworth for Black. I can see his choice against the Bernstein (shown via a 9c3 Be7 move order). I don't know what he suggests versus 9Be3 or 9Qe2. 9Be3 and 9Qe2 are not just "other" in my estimation, and can be just as critical as 9Nbd2, which I consider to be the main mainline of recent years.

Hmm.
Pavlovic writes quite a lot, but I have never been excited reading anything he has written.

This for me. His book on the benoni is probably one of the few that I don't own. I was excited to see a new book on the open Ruy....until I saw the author attached to the project.

The Modernized Open Ruy Lopez    by Milos Pavlovic

I see this is available as an E-Book at Forward Chess. The website provides a table of contents that gives an idea of which lines are covered, and at what depth. Also, some discussion and analysis.

I think the Open Ruy is alive and well. This book is probably a sensible purchase for someone who is new to the opening. If you already have one or more books on the Open Ruy, I don't know how much more you gain from buying this book.

At the moment there are 24 new books announced at TP,
among them 14 opening books, for example:

The Modernized Open Ruy Lopez    by Milos Pavlovic

Thinkers Publishing, forthcoming
