The Sicilian is not very practical because of anti-Sicilians (expend some time on the Open to not see any of them is kind of frustrating xDD).

I know this was just a tangent in your comment, but still: In Anti-Sicilians the stronger player tends to win, whichever side of the board they're sitting.

I'm playing the Sicilian more and more as I'm reducing outings with my good old but risky friend, the Pirc. And predictably I'm getting lots of Anti-Sicilians. But I don't mind it much as most of my regular opponents are weaker than me, and these systems are mostly about understanding (plus some calculation, of course) and less about concrete theory.

The one "Anti" thorn in my side in terms of solidity/drawishness is still the c3 Sicilian, but even there I see some hope. I just need to get much better at playing IQP positions, as they often arise whether I play 2...d5 or 2...Nf6.

Well, I am right now working with the Keep it Simple for Black course by Sielecki, on the Caro-Kann part. I always disliked the drawishness of the Caro. Now I am starting to see some light and I am going to replace my French by the Caro. The Sicilian is not very practical because of anti-Sicilians (expend some time on the Open to not see any of them is kind of frustrating xDD).

Once this is done (I think in a couple of weeks), I am going to focus on the response to 1.d4 and then.... QGD vs Chebanenko vs Nimzo will appear again xDD I am delaying my decision. For sure if Chebanenko is the winner, I will pick up Colovic course.

Thanks for the great feedback folks. I have purchased Colovic's LTR Chebanenko Slav without the video. So I am going to give that a try.

How is it going with Colovic' LTR repertoire?

I have a friend (much lower rated than myself) that is virtually in love with every product Alex Colovic releases. And I could see with his account one video of the course and his explanations are crystal clear. Very very good. I think his teaching abilities (video content wise) are very good. But... the Chebanenko itself... is good enough to spend time on it? Are people throwing at you the exchange slav game after game (xdd) ? it's so solid than it's difficult to win games with it?

I am doubting about acquiring the Chebanenko or the QGD product (both from Colovic in chessable) based in the quality of the opening. I have an opinion on QGD but do not on Chabanenko Slav.

Thx

Wondering  the same, anyone out there get the full course and like to share a review. I will watch the short and sweet later and see how that is.

The quality of the course is certainly fine. The usual emphasis on understanding which you find in most of Colovic's courses.

As far as the value of the Chebanenko itself is concerned. I did not check the course with engines nor did I look at the latest databases. It seems beside the point. Black's ideas are straightforward and less varied than in the other members of the Slav family. Keep a pawn on d5 and try your best to develop the light-squared bishop to f5 and g4 (At least that is how I understand the course. And yes there are exceptions of course.)

In its simplicity it is a bit like the London system. You will certainly frustrate some of your opponents. So far I have preferred other slav's (Triangle >= classical,semi-slav >= Chebanenko) but the Chebanenko is growing on me. The older you get the more appealing clear structures and lack of long forcing variations become. So it is likely to become my fall-back weapon when for whatever reason I have not looked at openings/chess for a while or don't feel up to a complicated battle.

Not a glowing recommendation but I do plan to go through his entire course at a leisurely pace (so far I only have looked at some of the lines in detail).

@TD - Would you mind elaborating a bit on how you utilize the information in the Chessable courses when you don't use the MoveTrainer?  I'm thinking of stopping the MoveTrainer myself and extracting the course content into Chessbase files.

PS - Are you still seeking an opinion on Countering the Queen's Gambit?  I have the book and can comment in the appropriate thread if you're interested.

I'm afraid I can't comment on the Chebanenko Slav course but I can recommend the Colovic LTR QGD course. Very clear and very happy using it so far.

There is also the course by Demuth, who does appear to know his stuff.

I get confused between chessworld, ichess etc (same people, different shop window?), but this is one place:

https://www.ichess.net/shop/chebanenko-slav-defense-adrien-demuth/

That and the Colovic one are the most up-to-date.

P. S. @TD: Are you able to remember most of the theory just from watching the videos? Kudos in that case. But if not, you might want to try using the MoveTrainer.

It's not my goal to remember the theory, but to try some different openings and variations in correspondence chess. If something sticks, then that is a bonus. Anyway I will increase my experience and hopefully my overall understanding by playing something different.

You can also buy the shorter version of the course, which contains 2+ hours of video. https://www.chessable.com/lifetime-repertoires-chebanenko-slav/course/37609/

I don't use the MoveTrainer of Chessable courses but like the videos and the extensive explanations very much.

To be clear, Ihat version is only shorter in the video department. Whether you buy it with full video or only free video, all the moves for training and all the text explanations are the same. And that's what matters most to me and, I suspect, to Antillian.

The free video is mostly just a roughly 5-minute preview for each chapter, and not all that useful. Though there may be a brief video introduction to the repertoire in an intro chapter (and also in the free "Short and Sweet" course when one is available).

P. S. @TD: Are you able to remember most of the theory just from watching the videos? Kudos in that case. But if not, you might want to try using the MoveTrainer.

There is a Bologan book on the Chebanenko, I read parts of it, but nothing about it seems to be at the forefront of my memory.

You can first try the free Short & Sweet course, to see if you like it. It contains 1+ hour of video. https://www.chessable.com/short-sweet-chebanenko-slav/course/37837/

Thanks. I am not familiar at all with Chessable. But I googled it. I am seeing $239 if you want the video explanations. But $39.99 for the moves only. I imagine the moves alone without the explanations won't make much sense. But that price is insane  Shocked

What am I missing here?

You're missing that most of the courses can very much be used without the videos, since they contain lots of text explanations too.  Smiley
In fact I don't watch much video there at all, but I still use the site a lot.

Each course overview gives the amount of words of instruction (i.e. text). I believe those instruction figures are seriously inflated since the same text bits can be repeated many times in different variations, but still they are useful for comparing the amount of text between courses.

Though for some courses it seems there really is a difference and you'd better get the videos to get the full benefit. Usually this will have been discussed by users in the forum for the course. I've seen this said about Erwin L'Ami's Caro-Kann course and especially about the "Chess Principles Reloaded" strategy courses by Andras Toth. Also, the sheer amount of video really is ballooning on some of the recent courses, especially the "Lifetime Repertoires", which probably means quite a few things are explained only in the videos. Though if you're a strong player, a lot of that could be basic stuff you already understand.

I don't have Colovic's LTR Chebanenko Slav myself, but I expect you can do fine there without the videos. Though it's best to check the course forum for any discusson of that before you buy.
