Isn't 6...Na6 and ...e5 the usual remedy for all those Bg5 setups? As White I don't mind transposing to the Benoni.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Hi.

I can make a few random observations I guess.

Mamedyarov seems to play this 5.Bg5 move more or less only after 4...0-0. I'd theorise it may have to do with avoiding 5...Bf5 but I really don't know.
Do you yourself play 4...0-0 or 4...d6? (After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.Nf3).

In the "6 .. Nbd7 7 O-O-O" line I'm guessing the moves are 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.Nf3 0-0 5.Bg5 d6 6.Qd2 Nbd7 7.0-0-0 - correct? It looks very aggressive. The computer basically indicates move any pawn a,b,c or d-line. Maybe 7...c6!?. Then 8.Bh6 b5!? is apparently good counterplay and 8.e4 d5 looks fully playable for black.

In correspondence I notice there was a (small) popularity uptick for 5.Bg5 in 2019 but overall unimpressive and even negative results. I could give  a few corr games where white won possibly; although in most of them black seems to be helping out somewhat Cheesy.

Have a nice day.

I play 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. Nf3 O-O 5. Bg5 d6

Thanks for the ideas. Been playing the KID for around 30 years yet somehow I just recently started encountering the Smyslov.

Would be interesting to see some coverage of this line. I know there are .. c5 lines to avoid this, but it's nice to have options. Mamedyarov seems to be the main Super GM who plays this line and has won several games in a row. I just had a 6 .. Nbd7 7 Bh6 game in my last tournament and I was satisfied with how that turned out after 7 .. e5 8 Bxg7 Kxg7 9 e4 Re8 10 Be2 (not best) exd4 11 Qxd4 where I played .. Nf8 instead of the better .. c5! I was in a playable game and eventually won a pawn and almost the game (drawn). I'm especially interested in playing against 6 .. Nbd7 7 O-O-O as Black.
