That is correct.

I like the colored number (pound?) sign (hashtag?) of your example. All I see are no dot, red dot, yellow dot, and green dot. The colored dots can be combined, for example yellow dot and red dot. I could use more options. Colored hashtags would be great.

As far as spotting new material, I recently discovered a technique using Chess Opening Wizard (COW) software. It works with PGN files. COW has a color-code feature.

I would try a method like this, your color preferences may vary:
  • # Green - Good move for my side
  • # Blue- Possible move for my side
  • # Red - Bad move for my side
  • # Yellow - Important(*) move for the other side
  • # Gray - Possible move for the other side
  • _ No color (null) - Newly imported move (TBD)

This way if you import some new moves, and don't get around to deciding which color to assign to them, you can still import some more new moves without completing that step first. Basically the uncolored moves are all TBD, importing more new moves is just more TBD. (I guess the same method would work if you switched "no color" for any other color.)

Correct me if I am wrong, but COW is coloring the move and not the position. So a new move that leads to a previously existing position still gets a color. It still seems like a useful feature.

(*) "Important" could mean any of best, trappy, thematic, difficult to remember, etc.

Maybe it should be in the FAQ

Yes, maybe it should, but does anyone actually read this? Undecided

I did *once*, but it was so long ago I didn't remember the answers. I did check again before my previous post.

Is that generally true, or only in the case of the Benoni?

Yes, it's true for all of them, we do the ChessPub Guides first and then use them to make everything else.

Thanks for the mention of PGN ChessPub Guides. I hadn't noticed, or thought much about, that option.

As far as spotting new material, I recently discovered a technique using Chess Opening Wizard (COW) software. It works with PGN files. COW has a color-code feature.

It goes like this. Import material without a color code (as I have always done in the past). When you have new material, import the new PGN with a color code, for example yellow. Every new move displays with a yellow dot.

It can be done somewhat differently. Import the PGN of the MBO guides with a yellow dot by each move. Then import PGN games without a dot. The guides give an overall structure and you can easily identify guide moves by the small yellow dot. Once you start to drill down, or away, with a game, there is no yellow dot.

I've just started this, but it looks promising.

Is that generally true, or only in the case of the Benoni? Maybe it should be in the FAQ.

Anyway this is a problem everywhere in publishing, isn't it?
  • second edition of a book - how much has changed?
  • paper vs ebook - are there any differences?
  • video with accompanying pgn - are all the lines in both?

I'm one of those types that just has to check for myself.

Can't you use the Benoni ChessPub Guides, they have the same text as the PDF eBooks and the CBV ones, too. They should download with the other PGN files from the PGN Archive.

I'm using ChessBase 10 on CrossOver/macOS, and the ChessBase file is not very well behaved. The links in the Text work, but the links in the theoretical section don't work. Too bad, it looks like GM Emms put a lot of work into these links...
Edited:
I wasn't using the game links correctly. Instead of clicking on the icon, I needed to click on the move just before the icon. Then Ctrl+Enter opens the linked game in ChessBase 10.

Anyway I work in PGN, so I wanted to replace the Text. There are 25 lines in the theoretical section, I put only the beginning moves into a PGN game as a substitute for the Text. Copied here in case anyone else is interested, also see the attachment for the same game.

Back to the eBook. In addition to annotated games, there is commentary and structure that makes the large number of games manageable. It reminds me of the hardcopy Encyclopedia of Chess Openings which referenced Chess Informant games. One big difference is that, in this case, the games and chess board are just a click away.

I consider this eBook to be a valuable resource to anyone who cares to take up the challenge of the challenging Modern Benoni Opening.

Yes, I agree, I suppose the reason these eBooks are not more popular is you can only use them with ChessBase, which only runs on Windows.

This downloads as a CBV file and makes a nice eBook using ChessBase. There are 456 annotated games and lines.

I took a quick peak at some of the lines that I remembered as critical. I think there is a general trend. Computer engines are more negative about Black's chances than are titled players. Giving a nod to engines, I played out some lines well beyond the end of theory. Engines eventually come around to agreeing with people. I think the human judgement of "initiative," "activity," "chances," eventually become manifest in the engine's computational scoring of positions.
