I notice that in one of the games in the latest French update (MVL-Ponkratov), the c3/d4 tension was resolved on move 15.

In many lines there is a long waiting game where white does not wants to to play cxd4 or black does not want to play dxc3 . Soon both sides run out improvents moves. Engines think 0.00 in many position but no forced repetitions.

Jones Coffea House Chess 2 covered this line well. White appears to have long lastning compensation.

There are some lines where black is 3 pawns ahead but can hardly move since white has great preusure.

Bd7 before cxd4 is bad becouse dxc5.

Thank you kylemeister- very informative. Of course I should have thought of 7.0-0.

@Rasblossom

On 6...cd there is 7. 0-0.

(Also, I seem to recall that there has indeed been some sort of defanging of 6...Bd7 7. dc.)

Possibly a silly question, I am getting back to chess after a long break and I might be relying on outdated theory, but:

-wasn't it the case that the above move order was considered inaccurate (with the "correct" line being interpolating 6...cxd4 before Bd7 to avoid the option)   as white can advantageously play 7.dxc5! (as in a much quoted Nimzo-Salwe game)? Has this been defanged somehow?

-even if it has, wouldn't black want to avoid these new gambit ideas anyway with the 6...cxd4 move order? Then Re1 is not a thing while 7.Nbd2?! Must be a worse version for white as I suspect black can do better than transposing with 7...Bd7 (eg dxc followed by Ne7-g6 comes to mind?)

Thanks for any reply!

I suppose we might see a few more Milner-Barry Gambits in the near future. Not only has Carlsen played it, but it also features as the recommendation against the French in new books on 1. e4 by both Gawain Jones and Simon Williams. Both books have gambits and aggressive lines as their themes.

The new idea is that after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Qb6 6. Bd3 Bd7 7. 0-0 cxd4, you don't immediately recapture on d4, but just develop with 8. Nbd2 (Carlsen) or 8. Re1 (Jones).
