I suppose the stronger you get, it becomes less about the material and more about putting in the focused work.

i had a friend, who became IM and was rated about 2500 USCF under 20 years of age, and he mentioned the informants by sahovski were very useful lessons.

the informants are filled with annotations which are rich in ideas and you can see high level ideas over the board through analysis as opposed to verbose explanations.

I think if your 2200 it wouldnt be bad to explain that getting every quarterly copy of that book might be a great idea for middlegame exercising.

I have a couple of their products, including 1000 best of the best, and greatest tournaments of 2001-2009.

There is no guaranteed successful method.

Good material, effort and personal organisation are not enough and will only take one so far.

I thinks it was Rowson who first pointed out the important distinction between knowledge/understanding and skill, but this was already hinted at in Tarrasch's famous quote:
"It is not enough to be a good player - one must also play well".

I think I have had a good chess education and have developed a pretty good understanding of chess (as I proved, to myself at any rate, in correspondence games played before the arrival of strong engines), but in combat over the board it's a different matter - strong nerves and a fierce will-to-win are somehow lacking.

It also seems to me that some people simply have better "processors" in their heads than others, probably something to do with a difference in "working memory".

I am disappointed but not disheartend at having long ago hit a ceiling. I retain my love for and interest in the game.

So, when do you start?
Good luck and let’s see some action from you now eh.
Useful to start with a Budapest APA.

being gm has to be pretty challenging when you come think of it. a perfect example is irina krush. she played in all the tournaments and then eventually finally became gm. its hard to match how many events she plays.

under the uscf you can see that she has played 608 events.

Following that advise will increase the chances indeed.

"Apply the learned knowledge."
I suspect this is the big stumble block.
GM Donner for instance was, the few times he was not lazy, famous for internalizing very quickly the new things he learned about chess (like when visiting WCh Euwe in the 1950's).

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Road from 1400 to 2500 explained in 3 simple tips (don't mix with easy) by the Swiss grandmaster Noel Studer: https://twitter.com/NoelStuder/status/1431229419834773505

I fully agree with it. I just don't have the time for it nor do I like it.

for endgames i got paul keres practical chess endgame, and karsten muellers fundamental chess endings. to go through the material and assimilate the concepts. in other words doing the endgame presentation.

but for more i have the encyclopedia of chess endgames from sahovski.com, pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen all in pgn format. meaning i can do them like tactics.
its about 1000 problems per theme.
pretty strong.

i would say those are the 100 points on the endgame.

I recall that IMs Andras Toth and Kostya Kavutskiy recommended a study program of Shereshevsky's "Endgame Strategy" and Mueller/Pajeken's "How to Play Chess Endgames" in that order.  IM Toth in particular stated that the Mueller/Pajeken work is more important than technical endgames (FCE) for a practical player.  I am not qualified to respond in this thread, so I am just referring you to a couple IMs.  You can seek out their Youtube channels for more info.  GL

He also stated that you can split those 300 rating points into themes:
100 rating points openings
100 rating points middlegames
100 rating points endgames

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that. It's not a linear scale, it's not additive, and ratings don't measure knowledge.

2200 rating means 75% winning expectancy against 2000 players, 25% winning expectancy against 2400 players. So to go from 2200 to 2500 in three steps would be:
  1. How to score 25% against 2500 players
  2. How to score 25% against 2600 players
  3. How to score 25% against 2700 players

OK. I don't know what you need, of course. Maybe you're already GM level at endgame tactics and strategy.

But if you're going to study Keres, Müller FCE and the Encyclopedia, all on theoretical endings, won't there be a lot of overlap? I think you could skip one of them without it really affecting the end result.

interesting, i think the theoretical endgames though are the only ones that i need. to be a practical player that is.

Hi Charles,

I'm not even an FM (yet), but I think your endgame part is missing something:

This is all mostly about technical endgames. But I believe both endgame tactics and endgame strategy are just as important for practical results, if not more so.

So you might go through and repeat something like Van Perlo's Endgame Tactics and either Hellsten's Mastering Endgame Strategy or Müller and Pajeken's How to Play Chess Endgames. If these are too easy for you already, you could look into more advanced works on tactical and practical endgames by Dvoretsky, Nunn and Aagaard. Romain Edouard also has a calculation training book just on endgames.
