He does not consider Nc3 in that position at all. Stockfish claims black is busted...

I have also looked  closer at some other lines, I realy dont like the Benoni lines vs Catalan maybee a matter of taste. I also noticed that the only database used is Chesstempo and the engine used is  Deep Fritz 13 thus is a very old and outdated Fritz version...

Also bibliografy is mainly older books, some from 1970.

I begin to belive that every single line needs to be extra computer checked and compared to modern books.

5..b6 against the London is supposed to be bad because of 6.Nc3! unless there is something new for Black...

Got my copy today only made quick look but looks promesing. Very interesting strategy vs London and  Colle.

In Qc2 Nimzo he goes for my old favorite Nc6 but with a twist by not castling early.

I have never played Queens Indian,  I played Nimzo/Bogo, before so I know very little about the line.

@nestor, thanks a lot! That's very helpful! I might buy the book then. It looks like a nice repertoire.

(Continued from last post)

In the Torre and the London, he goes for Taimanov's plan with ...Ba6. So:

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bg5 h6 4.Bh4 c5 5.e3 b6 6.c3 Be7 7.Bd3 Ba6; and
1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4 c5 4.e3 b6 5.c3 Be7 6.h3 OO 7.Bd3 Ba6.

These are just the main lines; alternatives, including other move orders (particularly 2.Bf4) are also covered, but the overall plan is much the same. In contrast to the Tromp recommendations, I have played this way for Black for a long time and found them pretty easy to handle.

The recommended lines tend to delay ...d5 until there is a specific reason to play it.

So in the Tromp, Davies starts with 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6 3.e4 h6 4.Bxf6 Qxf6, and now for example:
5.c3 d6 6.Bd3 g6 7.Ne2 e5; and similarly
5.Nf3 d6 6.Nc3 g6; but by contrast
5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Qd3 d5 7.e5 Qd8.

(As in the Nimzo and QID chapters, these are quite demanding choices. In principle, Black's two bishops versus White's space and initiative are very reasonable trade-offs. in practice, those of us who were roughly contemporary with Julian Hodgson learned very quickly that his initiative would checkmate you before you got to enjoy your bishop pair in the endgame!)

@nestor, thanks for the overview!

Can you explain this bit:
"Normal lines are given against the Tromp, Torre, London etc."

Do you mean systems with ...d5 or the ones where black refrains with ...d6?

OK here goes...

The main Nimzo lines are

4.Qc2 Nc6 5.Nf3 d6

4.e3 OO 5.Bd3 d5 6.Nf3 b6 7.OO Bb7 8.cxd5 exd5
4.e3 OO 5.Nge2 d5 6.a3 Be7 and similar, with the main theme of developing with d5, b6 and Bb7 and avoiding Bxc3. The Hubner is not the repertoire recommendation; there is one place where a Hubner-type solution is given for one specific move order (see below). This chapter also gives games with the delayed Samisch move orders 4.e3 OO 5.a3 and 4.e3 OO 5.Bd3 d5 6.a3 and Davies points out the differences these move orders make.

4.a3 Bxc3+ 5.bxc3 b6 6.f3 Ba6 7.e4 Nc6

4.f3 c5

4.Bg5 h6 5.Bh4 c5 6.d5 Bxc3+ 7.bxc3 d6 8.e3 e5

4.Nf3 c5 5.g3 Nc6 6.Bg2 Ne4
4.Nf3 c5 5.e3 Bxc3+ - this is the Hubner-type solution to a specific move-order, as the repertoire is 4.e3 OO.

Minor lines are also covered with normal replies.

The main Queen's Indian lines are

4.g3 Bb7 5.Bg2 Be7 6.OO OO 7.Nc3 Na6 and 7.d5 Na6

4.a3 Bb7 5.Nc3 Ne4 (and so also 4.Nc3 Bb7 5.a3 Ne4)

4.e3 c5 5.Nc3 d6

Again, minor lines are covered with normal replies.

Against 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 he gives 3...c5 and goes into the fianchetto Benoni.

Normal lines are given against the Tromp, Torre, London etc.

Against 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 e6 he gives 3.Nc3 Bb4 and 3.g3 a6 4.Bg2 b5.

In the English he prefers to avoid 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e6 3.e4 for Black, so the repertoire is 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4 and 1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 c6.

Many of these repertoire choices are deliberately quite demanding, so as to provide unbalanced positions with decent winning chances. Davies has identified and discussed all of the move order issues I looked for, but I haven't had the book for very long, so don't shoot me if I haven't mentioned a point of concern to you in the above summary.

Yes, it should be very interesting to know the suggested lines for Black...

And I'd like to know how GM Davies addresses transposition issues like 4.e3 O-O 5.a3. In the game Gligoric-Keres, Zürich 1953 he mentions Black castled queenside and didn't play ...c5.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I'm now a bit curious as to whether he addresses 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6 4. g3 Bb7 5. Bg2 Be7 6. 0-0 0-0 7. Nc3 Na6 8. Ne5 d5, transposing to a line which goes back to the 1970s.  (It was played by Robert Byrne in '76, and by Karpov and Tal in '77.)

Does anyone have this new book by Davies? It’s a complete repertoire against 1.d4. Based on the pdf excerpt he recommends the Hubner variation in the 4.e3 Nimzo and 4.g3 Bb7 with …Na6 in the QID. There isn’t an index of variations though so I was wondering if anyone has the book and can list what lines he recommends.
