My game has finished...

[Event "ChessWorld.net"]
[Date "2021.??.??"]
[White "tsmenace"]
[Black "Panza"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "C28"]
[PlyCount "83"]
[EventDate "2021.??.??"]

1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Bc4 Nc6 6. d3 exf4 7. Bxf4 Bg4 8. Qd2 O-O 9. O-O-O Ne5 10. Bxe5 dxe5 11. Rdf1 Qe7 12. h3 Bd7 13. Qg5 Rae8 14. g4 Kh8 15. Qh4 c6 16. g5 Ng8 17. Qg3 Be3+ 18. Kb1 Bf4 19. Qg1 b5 20. Bb3 a5 21. a4 Be6 22. Bxe6 fxe6 23. g6 Rb8 24. gxh7 Nh6 25. Ne2 bxa4 26. Nxf4 exf4 27. Ne5 Qb4 28. Ng6+ Kxh7 29. Nxf8+ Kg8 30. Kc1 Qxb2+ 31. Kd2 Qb4+ 32. Ke2 Rxf8 33. Can't see any real improvements for White in the early stages.

As Victor has mainly focused on the Ruy Lopez and Italian game, it would be nice to have more games from other openings, e.g. the Scotch!

Yes, there will be an interesting Scotch game in a day or two, plus an Evans Gambit, a Max Lange ... but I couldn't find an appropriate ...Bc5 KG, although there was a game of Victor's that went 6...0-0 7 f5.

5. d4 exd4 6. cxd4 Bb6 7. Nc3 f5!? 8. Bc4 fxe4 9. Ng5 Nf6 10. Nf7 Qe7 11. Nxh8 Bg4 12. Qa4 d5 13. Bb5 Bd7 14. Be3 O-O-O

The same position can be reached after:
1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. c3 Bb6 5. d4 ed4 6. cd4 Nc6!?
7. Nc3 f5!

7...Nf6 may be possible. Black also has 6...Bg4!?

However, as Jonathan Tait noted, White can play 5Na3
Perhaps 5...f5

You know while it isn't played often at a high level... 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 6. Bb5+ c6 7. dxc6 bxc6 8. Bd3 is interesting and recently was played by Gwain Jones last month plus has been played against Carlsen and Ding Liren several times in the last few years.

Yes, I have also noticed this trend, see https://www.chesspublishing.com/content/1/index.htm#two

I think I will do the next one or two 1 e4 e5 updates myself, if there are any lines that subscribers would like to see analysed, or variations that haven't received enough coverage recently, just let me know here and I might look at them. Wink

The Wilkes-Barre/Traxler-Keres variation lives! (sort of).

I notice Stockfish likes the rare 4. c3 Nc6!?, for instance:

5. d4 exd4 6. cxd4 Bb6 7. Nc3 f5!? 8. Bc4 fxe4 9. Ng5 Nf6 10. Nf7 Qe7 11. Nxh8 Bg4 12. Qa4 d5 13. Bb5 Bd7 14. Be3 O-O-O

5. Bb5 f5 6. d4 exd4 7. cxd4 Bb4+ 8. Bd2 fxe4 9. Bxb4 exf3 10. Qxf3 Bd7 11. Bc3 Qe7+

5. Bb5 f5 6. fxe5 fxe4 7. d4 exd3 8. Bg5 Ne7 9. Qxd3 Bf5 10. Qc4 h6 11. Bxe7 Qxe7 12. b4 Be6 13. Qe4 Bb6 14. Bxc6+ bxc6 15. Qxc6+ Kf7

with fascinating complications in all three lines.

ChessPub Feb 2021, seems to be looking up for black.

I have a current online game with this...

[Event "ChessWorld.net"]
[Date "2021.??.??"]
[White "tsmenace"]
[Black "Panza"]
[ECO "C30"]
[PlyCount "29"]
[EventDate "2021.??.??"]

1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Bc4 Nc6 6. d3 exf4 7. Bxf4 Bg4 (7... O-O) 8. Qd2 O-O 9. O-O-O Ne5 10. Bxe5 dxe5 11. Rdf1 Qe7 12. h3 Bd7 13. Qg5 (13. g4 c6
14. g5 $2 Nh5) 13... Rae8 14. g4 Kh8 15. Qh4

...and as far as I can see White has absolutely nothing.

So, yes, it's probably time to look at 4 c3 again. I notice I've done quite well with 4...Bb6 5 Na3 in the past.

Yes, I noticed that too. It's funny that the best move (according to Stockfish) is only the 8th most popular!
I will definitely keep an eye on this one over the coming months, already there was a recent game from Gawain.

What do you think about
1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. c3!? Bb6 5. d4 ed4 6. cd4 Bg4 7.Nc3!?

White will answer 7...Bxf3 with 8Qxf3 gambit the d pawn, play Bd2 and castle queen side. Meanwhile black will try to find a safe home for his king.

Yes, there have certainly been a lot of Guioco Pianos over the last few years!
