Alas, the variation 5...Bxa6 6.Nc3 g6 7.g3 d6 8.Bg2 Bg7 9.Nh3 is missing...

This reminds of something I think Joe Gallagher said about the Kings Indian, that some times we have to remember we are playing black and so a draw isn't the end of the world  Smiley

Thanks for the heads-up on this Smiley. I'll be most interested in the King's Walk Kxf1 stuff - The sample at https://www.niggemann.com/en/the-benko-revisited-volume-2.html suggests he'll be recommending ...Nbd7 with ...Qb6. We've discussed some ideas in the thread "Is there still hope in the King Walk variation ?" https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?num=1585774390.

My main concern is (early move-order may vary): 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 g6 6.Nc3 Bxa6 7.e4 Bxf1 8.Kxf1 d6 9.g3 Bg7 10.Kg2 0–0 11.Nf3 Nbd7 12.a4 Qb6 13.Qe2 Rfb8 14.Nb5 Ne8 15.h4!? Even if Kovalchuk has a good answer to that, there's still 13.Ra3 Rfb8 14.Nd2 to deal with. Perhaps he'll suggest swapping ...Nbd7 and ...Qb6 over, i.e. 11...Qb6 12.Qe2 (12.a4 Na6!) Nbd7 13.a4 etc., but this does allow 11...Qb6 12.Re1 Nbd7 13.h3 Rfb8 14.e5 which can get very drawish.

I'll have to wait and see what Kovalchuk comes up with!

It looks like Kovalchuk is playing 6...Bxa6 instead of 6...Bg7, or even 5...Bxa6.
